The resolution was approved by the EP’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) at the end of January.
“The power plant is being developed as a geopolitical project between Belarus and Russia, and its construction and future operation are a source of potential threat to the European Union and its members in terms of safety, health and the environment,” the resolution said.
He acknowledges that Astrava’s electricity can be traded in the Baltic countries, although they have decided not to allow it.
“Despite the general agreement of the Baltic states to terminate electricity trade with Belarus, it is still possible for this country’s electricity to enter the European Union market through the Russian grid,” the bill reads.
The European Commission is invited to evaluate and propose measures to suspend electricity exchanges with Belarus, in accordance with international trade and other rules, to prevent Astravo’s electricity from entering the EU market while Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania remain connected to the BRELL network.
Furthermore, the draft deplores the hasty commercial operation of the power plant in March and emphasizes that all the safety recommendations of the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG) must be implemented before the nuclear power plant enters commercial operation.
According to the document, MEPs are concerned that the urgent operation of the power plant does not meet the highest international standards for nuclear and environmental safety, including recommendations from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Parliamentarians are concerned about the choice of the location of the Astrava nuclear power plant, 50 kilometers from Vilnius and close to other European Union countries: Poland, Latvia and Estonia.
MEPs also drew attention to the importance of speeding up the synchronization of the Baltic power grids with continental Europe, stressing that the Astrava nuclear power plant could in no way jeopardize the desynchronization of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania from BRELL.
MEPs stress that the nuclear power plant project is being implemented despite protests by Belarusian citizens and non-governmental organizations, as well as a large number of incidents during the construction and commissioning of the power plant.
The EP commission calls for the establishment of early warning systems for radiation hazards in countries adjacent to the power plant.
The resolution expresses its full solidarity with the citizens of Belarus and the EU countries who are directly concerned about the construction and operation of the Astrava nuclear power plant, and calls for a greater involvement of the EU on this issue of “utmost European importance. “.
