In a new article published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, researchers from New York University decided to find out how coronavirus mortality is caused by mental disorders.
They examined 7.3 thousand. Patients infected with coronavirus in clinics in New York in March-May 2020. and distinguished three groups of people with mental disorders: schizophrenia, anxiety and affective disorders.
Within 45 days of follow-up, 864 patients died. The researchers examined how many of them belonged to each of the three previously excluded groups.
It was found that there were 2.7 times more patients with schizophrenia than patients without mental disorders. The number of deaths in the group with anxiety and affective disorder did not differ from those without mental disorders.
Schizophrenia has been shown to be the second highest risk of dying from coronavirus, according to researchers. Researchers still don’t understand why this is the cause of more human deaths, but they believe it may be related to a faulty immune system that is related to genetic or other factors.
