“It is very bad not to have an ambassador there for half a year. We should cultivate that friendship through diplomacy,” Tadas Vizgirda, chairman of the board of the US Chamber of Commerce, told BNS on Monday.

“If there is no ambassador for six months, it seems very frivolous,” he added.

The US Chamber of Commerce approached the president last week, calling for the appointment of an ambassador to Washington as soon as possible.

According to T. Vizgirda, it is necessary to consider the candidacies of the former Ministers of Foreign Affairs and National Defense L. Linkevičius and R. Karoblis.

We have two great candidates who, due to the ‘political cold’, have been left out of the question. That you do not consider two very experienced candidates, especially L. Linkevičius, is really regrettable. I would suggest considering the candidacies of both, “said T. Vizgirda.

The American Chamber of Commerce represents more than 150 American businesses and entrepreneurs in Lithuania and employs more than 30,000 people. Lithuanian.

Minister: The call is understandable

Secretary of State Gabriel Landsberg told BNS that the call from the American business community is understandable and that every effort is being made to ensure that the process of appointing an ambassador is not delayed.

However, according to the minister, it is difficult to talk about candidates because there is no consent from the United States for a particular candidate.

“The call from the American Chamber of Commerce is understandable: the political and economic ties between our countries are extremely intense. We are doing everything possible to ensure that this process does not take any longer and we are looking for the best solution for the state,” said G Landsbergis.

“However, it is too early to talk about candidates until consent has been obtained from the host country for a specific presentation,” he added.

Lithuania has not had an ambassador in Washington since late last summer.

According to diplomatic sources, in recent months it has been discussed that R. Karoblis and L. Linkevičius could become Lithuanian ambassadors in Brussels and Washington.

However, President Nausėda rejected such proposals, stating that they needed “political cooling”.

The presidency promised to comment later on Monday.
