On June 9, a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation (LKF) was held in Kaunas, where the leaders of the country’s leagues addressed the most important issues.
The LKF Secretary General attended the meeting, which lasted half an hour longer than planned. Mindaugas Špokas, President of the Lithuanian Basketball League (Betsafe-LKL) Remigijus Milašius, Representatives of the LKL Players Association met for the first time and other more influential personalities from the world of basketball.
The meeting decided to close the last remaining league: students. No medals were awarded, but spots were set at intervals to prevent coaches from losing grades.
A more delicate subject is the President of the LKF Arvydo Sabonio homework extension. The election of a new president would take place in the autumn, but after the postponement of the Olympic Games and an extraordinary situation, it was decided to extend his mandate for another year.
“Arvydas agreed to continue his duties. He is a basketball man, not just an official. Arvydas is one of the initiators of the preparation for the Olympic team in Kaunas. He and Mindaugas Špokas had the most information, it is not easy to do such a big tournament, “said R. Milašius.
M. Špokas confirmed that the decision was made unanimously. It is true that A. Sabonis himself did not participate in the meeting due to the operation and confirmed his candidacy in a live broadcast. Both men’s national team strategists must retain their duties until the Olympics. Darius Maskoliūnas, both women under Šernius blankets. His publications have not yet been officially approved, but M. Špokas called it just a formality.
It was also ensured that the construction of the Basketball House in Kaunas was proceeding according to plan and that no significant changes had occurred due to the pandemic.
The federation’s closest plans are to establish a national men’s national team camp in Palanga, a similar women’s national team camp, and the Baltic youth tournaments should take place at the end of the summer. The seventeen-year-old world championships, in which the Lithuanian women’s team, led by Justė Jocytė, was to take part, have not yet been canceled, but their implementation seems difficult. An alternative is also planned: live streams of skills competitions.
The “windows” of the FIBA European Championship team are waiting for November, where the men’s national team will play both games in Klaipeda. Much attention will also be paid to the fights of the women’s national team.
The country’s championships will be encouraged to open as soon as possible, as the focus is on the Olympic team awaiting the summer of 2021.
