“It is a truly frustrating misunderstanding, heard on such a memorable day, when we all bowed again and stood in memory of the victims of the Jewish nation during World War II. And it is a pity that sometimes we hear such deliberations from competent people and people with great political responsibility, which hurt the families of the victims and our partners, “said G. Nausėda at a press conference held in the Presidency.

The Head of State hopes that the appropriate conclusions will be drawn after the statements of V. Rakutis.

“I hope that conclusions will be drawn from this that the opinion of this person, specifically Mr. V. Rakutis, does not in any way imply the opinion of the party, faction or Seimas.” I think there have been quite a few comments, denials from the party leader, but we apologize for this misunderstanding and please do not jump to conclusions, “said the president.

ELTA recalls that after an article in which Rakutis discussed whether more attention should be paid to questions about what ideas led some Jews to cooperate with the Soviet government, to occupy important positions in the repressive Soviet structures, and claimed that there were Jews who collaborated with the Soviet government. the Nazi regime, the politician received much criticism.

Members of the Seimas Social Democratic Party faction addressed the Seimas leadership, calling for the conservative V. Rakutis to be removed from the post of President of the Freedom Struggles and of the State Historical Memory Commission. At that time, the president of the Lithuanian Jewish community, Faina Kukliansky, asked the Attorney General’s Office to launch a pre-trial investigation into the denial and distortion of the Holocaust.

On Friday, V. Rakutis himself publicly apologized for the insults and announced that he had resigned as president of Freedom Fights and the State Historical Memory Commission.
