Vilnius “Žalgiris” footballers trained twice more in Pilaitė on Tuesday under a large shiny dome, but on Wednesday they will not be able to do so: there is nothing left where the dome was located.
Video cameras captured an image of how the dome collapsed around 3 p.m.
On the eve of the collapse, the snow deposits were already visible, but some of them were still slipping.
“In this case, apparently, the snow was heavy, snow was accumulating in the middle, a large snow formation formed, a kind of waterhole appeared, the dome seam was missing and it collapsed. This is the main version, said Vilnius Deputy Mayor Valdas Benskunskas, who visited the stadium in Pilaitė on Wednesday morning. “Fortunately, no one was hurt.”
On a typical day, about a hundred children train in the plaza, divided into exercises in the four rooms of the large plaza.
There is no quarantine training. Recently, only the Vilnius main team “Žalgiris” and the youngsters from the top group of football school “Ateities” have been training in Pilaitė.
The people of Grunwald felt Tuesday that there might be trouble.
An inner voice scolded that something was wrong here.
The vibration was felt from above. The snow sometimes slid with a sound like a descending elevator, said Žydrūnas Grudzinskas, who is currently assisting coach Vladimirs Čeburinas “Žalgiris” from Vilnius. – Anxiety was felt, but there is a lot of space in the balloon, he probably wouldn’t land head first immediately.
We weren’t afraid, we were still focused on training. Although the inner voice scolded that something was wrong here. “
The former defender of the Lithuanian soccer team is almost two meters tall, but the snow accumulated on the top was already higher.
He had the impression that the snow was beginning to squeeze the dome at the bottom from the edges.
Gediminas Tvarijonas, one of the directors of the football school, who trained under Pilaitė before the quarantine, claimed that there have been cases in Norway where those domes were also broken. According to him, they must be heated from the inside.
In this case, the temperature under the dome had to fluctuate between 10 and 11 degrees, the air was constantly blown by diesel generators, maintaining the shape of the dome.
According to V. Benkunskas, the square supervisors tried to increase the pressure and temperature of the air inside so that the melted snow would slide down from the dome.
But most likely the structure was not adapted to withstand such a large amount of snow formed.
“Now we see that the snow that falls in the middle of the square, on the cracked dome, is like pieces of ice. His weight was heavy.
Tons of snow broke the dome, Vilnius’ deputy mayor said. – Nothing could be done. The height of the dome was about 20 meters, perhaps there could have been some structural ropes to pull the snow, or she had to slide down herself. The dome itself is plastic, slippery; according to the manufacturers, the snow had to move on its own. “
The football dome in Pilaitė opened its doors only last August, its construction price reached around 2.1 million. of which 600 thousand. The artificial turf was provided by the Lithuanian Football Association as part of the UEFA program.
The losses are not yet known.
“The leadership is insured, the insurance company is already informed. It will clarify whether the use of the facility has caused any technological damage.
The representative of the producers says that the crack can be glued, – said V. Benkunskas. – It’s a shame it happened in the middle of the season. It will not be used for the intended time for some time. “
Vilnius “Žalgiris”, which is preparing for the season in the second week, intends to move the exercise to the closed arena of “Sportima”.
Another soccer dome continues the fight
There is another high-rise football stadium covered by an inflatable dome in Vilnius, which still has a roof over its head.
Ivan Švabovičius, director of the Baltic Football Academy in Karoliniškės, said that they had started preparing earlier for the fight against snow.
Usually in the arena, the heat was turned on before and after workouts, and this time the temperature remained constant at around 10 degrees.
“We knew a natural disaster was coming and the manufacturers had warned us that the most dangerous thing for the dome was wet snow that fell for a long time.
We turned on the heat, which worked for the second day in a row. This is how the snow melted on top – said Ivan Švabovičius, director of the Baltic Football Academy. – Our biggest challenge was collecting snow at the bottom.
We invited two teams, the parents of the players, we dug the snow together, because otherwise it would be ten meters high. We will continue this fight, but we must win. “
Last year, during the dome operation during the first winter, the Baltic Football Academy had no problems because there was little snowfall.
The sand itself in Karoliniškės is smaller than in Pilaitė, moreover, the air blowing systems are different. At the Baltic Football Academy, the hot air is made by gas fans, and at Pilaitė, by diesel fans.
Some soccer specialists felt that after noticing the snow accumulated on top of the dome in Pilaitė, it was possible to let the air out of the dome without waiting. It would take about a couple of hours, and after removing the snow in four hours, it could inflate again.
Donatas Tvarijonas, director of the Ateities football school in Scandinavia, has noted that heated artificial turf technology is more popular in Norway than domes.
“We have to clear the snow, but then we play football outside and our feet are warm,” said D. Tvarijonas.
