“We are going to do our best. But the maturity tests must be done,” Minister J. Šiugždinienė told LNK news.
He stated that the situation of Lithuanian education is such that it would be difficult to rely solely on teachers’ evaluations.
“Exams in Lithuania are extremely important for several things. We see and we know, we analyze the situation: the differences in educational results can reach 70 percent. Among other things, how teachers evaluate children and the results of exams state of maturity ”, explained the head of the ministry.
At a remote press conference on Tuesday, J. Šiugždinienė also said that he had heard such speeches, but that he did not plan to cancel the exams and that he is really making efforts to help students who have learning difficulties by organizing additional lessons and consultations.
“Both university consultations, distance videos and lessons. We really try to help children as much as possible. You already know that we have made the decision to drop the Lithuanian language and literature exam. We also plan to implement some parts of the exams remotely. We do our best to make the preparation of graduates as good as possible, but in Lithuania the differences in educational outcomes are huge.
If we compare the results of the maturity exams with the marks that final students receive in schools, we will see that these differences reach up to 70%. in some areas. It would certainly be difficult to give up the maturity exams. This is directly related to admission to higher education. “
Furthermore, according to the minister, this exposed one of the main problems of general education, that such differences in educational results show that the system is really not good.

Some students went back to schools
Some students, who have difficulty studying at home, have returned to schools or daycare centers, but less than planned. According to the municipalities, the children will gradually be reunited.
For example, in Vilnius J. Basanavičius progymnasium, 7 students study remotely on the premises of the educational institution. 4 of them were before, these are medical kids.
According to the director of the progymnasium Jurgita Nemanienė, if the number of children wishing to return increased, the school would easily accept only the second.
“If there was another class, we would face that challenge. But if more and more students started coming back, it would be difficult,” Vilnius progymnasium director J. Basanavičius told LNK.
The Vilnius City Municipality ensures that most schools are ready to accept many more children.
“We have schools of this type with 20-30 children each,” said Alina Kovalevskaja, education adviser to the Vilnius city administration.
About 400 children came to Vilnius schools to study remotely on Monday. There are expected to be about 1,200 of them in total.
“It has been estimated that there will be more than 1,000 such students. But you can see that these children are gradually arriving this week,” the education adviser for the Vilnius municipal administration told LNK News.
However, it will not be possible to return to face-to-face training from February, as the government believes that the risk of the spread of the coronavirus remains too high.
The Minister of Health, Arūnas Dulkys, indicates how much the number of infections should decrease to do so.
“If we achieve the result, we would have less than 200 cases for every 100,000. population, within 14 days, we could consider contacting again or die in primary education. (…) If there were less than 150 of those cases, we could start talking about contact and mixed education for older students, ”said the minister.
According to the minister, even if the number of less than 100 new cases per day is reached, students and teachers returning to schools must be tested regularly.
