Supermarket congestion

Kaunas District Mayor Valerijus Makūnas emphasized that with the rapid development of shopping malls and other business enterprises, a particularly difficult situation arose on Šakiai Road. In addition to the already operational Maxima and Rimi and the construction of Iki, the Lidl shopping center is planned to be located on Obelynės street. The Analizė office and logistics center and other businesses also operate in this area.

“The appearance of another commercial facility represents a threat to traffic safety, so we must shrug our shoulders and look for the best solution to modernize the roundabout,” said the mayor.

Šarūnas Šukevičius, director of the Kaunas district municipal administration, recalled that the plot of the shopping center on Obelynės street connects with Šakių pl. existing roundabout.

“The intensity of traffic on this stretch of the road is already very high, and with the new shopping center, car traffic will only increase,” the director said.

The municipality’s leaders emphasized the importance of ensuring smooth and uninterrupted traffic on the Šakiai Highway and streets of local importance.

Looking for complex solutions

LIGD manager Remigijus Lipkevičius assured that this place and its problems are well known to the management. “The road is very busy: in a small section there are two roundabouts, a traffic light, the kindergartens are located nearby, so congestion forms during the east and west peak.

It is necessary to find suitable design solutions, how the situation would not get worse with the arrival of a new commercial entity, but, on the contrary, it would improve with the reorganization of traffic regulation ”, said R. Lipkevičius.

It was discussed whether it is necessary to transform the roundabout into two lanes, or perhaps install separate lanes for maneuvers to the right from Šakių pl. to Obelynės street. and Obelynės st. to Sakiai pl.

R. Lipkevičius hinted that in the future LAKD plans to prepare complex solutions for the reconstruction of the Via Baltica road section from Šilainiai to Garliava, as the traffic on this section is also very heavy.

Will make suggestions in a week.

Lidl representatives reported that the assessment of traffic organization flows is already underway at the request of the designers and various options are being explored.

“We have conducted evaluations of the traffic management solutions at the intersection of Šakių pl., Margirio, Gėlių and Obelynės streets, Ringaudai settlement and we see that after the construction of the shopping center, the traffic will increase more during the western peak.” he explained. Rimvydas Sabonis, director of Eismo inžinerija.

The municipality, together with LAKD, forced the entrepreneurs to assess the impact of the new shopping center on traffic safety, as well as entry and exit to / from Obelynės str. to / from roundabout traffic flows, composition and performance.

The designers promised to submit all the complex proposals and traffic organization schemes to the LAKD and the highway construction coordination commission within a week, according to the Kaunas district media report.

Other requests will be considered

The Kaunas District Municipality leaders asked LAKD to examine the proposal regarding the state highway on Sodų Street from the Ringaudai side. Install an additional left turn lane as well as a deceleration lane on Sod S Street as you exit the Academy.

“There are two kindergartens and a gym near Sodų street. About 200 children attend kindergarten alone and a thousand go to school. When transporting their children to educational institutions, parents release them on the sidewalk of the Šakiai highway. This stops traffic and creates congestion. In addition, children cross the street unsafe ”, explained the mayor.

LAKD executives assured that this request will be examined and possible solutions will be presented.

Municipality representatives reminded LAKD that a kindergarten is under construction in Noreikiškės and that approvals have not been received from the Directorate so far regarding the new driveways on Šiltnamio Street. They are necessary for the formation of plots.
