Choose healthy products

It is often said that sleep is affected by an emotional state or experiences from the previous day, but it is mentioned less frequently that food eaten during the day can also have both negative and positive effects on sleep quality and time. It takes time to fall asleep. Therefore, when planning purchases, you should pay attention to what should be added to the daily diet to improve the rest.

Ernesta Dapkienė, Director of the Communication and Image Department at Maxima, warns that when planning their meal, Lithuanians are increasingly choosing healthy products that not only help them fall asleep faster, but are also enriched with vitamins that strengthen the immunity.

“Analyzing the shopping baskets, we see that there are more and more herbal teas, bananas and nuts, which are identified by health professionals as products that can improve the quality of sleep. Therefore, we carefully analyze the needs of buyers to ensure not only a wide range of these products, but also high quality, ”says E. Dapkienė.

For a delicious day and a quiet evening

Based on the recommendations of health experts, Brigita Baratinskaitė, director of the Maxima Food Production Department, points out that in case of sleep disorders, not only the lifestyle but also the diet of the food should be taken into account consumed. According to her, people who eat irregularly and often fleetingly are more likely to experience sleep problems than those who live at the same pace every day and choose more varied and vitamin-rich foods. In addition, the consumption of products such as bananas, cherries, nuts, duck or turkey can even help to solve insomnia problems.

“Products containing calcium or tryptophan can have a sedative or even hypnotic effect. Calcium is effective in relieving stress and stabilizing nerve fibers, and tryptophan is converted to serotonin and melatonin, which are the most important hormones for calming the brain. There is a lot of melatonin in cherry juice, so scientists have shown that those who drink a glass of cherry juice every morning find it easier to fall asleep at night, ”says B. Baratinskaitė.

Calcium, of course, is found in dairy products, and a large amount of tryptophan is found in duck, dates, peanuts, and bananas. The latter also contain a lot of potassium, which helps to relax tense muscles, making it easier for those who eat bananas to fall asleep every day, and the quality of sleep is better. It is true that a handful of nuts before bed can also help you relax and fall asleep faster, but it is important to know that they are high in calories, so at night, when your metabolism slows down, you should consume them in responsible manner.

A variety of herbal teas that have a calming effect can also help those who want to improve the quality of their sleep. Chamomile, lemon balm, or peppermint tea has a relaxing effect. Herbs are recommended to be scalded at night, half an hour before bedtime. Lavender can also help fight insomnia. You can use both teas that contain this plant and essential oils. Lavender also helps calm you down, making your sleep better and deeper.

Recipe for a sweeter dream

In order to make sleep sweeter, B. Baratinskaitė offers to use products that improve the quality of sleep not only as a snack, but also as the main meal of the day. She shares a light meal of products containing tryptophan and melatonin.
