“The Hungarian Pharmaceutical Service has issued a temporary license for the AstraZeneca and Sputnik vaccines,” Gergely Gulyas, head of Viktor Orban’s office, told a news conference.
Under the terms of the EU’s European Medicines Agency (EMA), based in Amsterdam, a national regulatory authority can issue a temporary vaccine license in case of emergency.
According to G. Gulyas, the decision of the Hungarian doctors who visited Moscow for a few weeks allows Budapest to complete the order. Chancellor Peter Szijjarto will discuss the issue in the Russian capital on Thursday.

AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford have applied for authorization to distribute their coronavirus vaccine in the EU. The EEA said last week that a decision could be made until January 29.
This vaccine would be the third to be approved for use in all 27 EU countries, after Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, and the unit is struggling to accelerate the rate of vaccination.
In August, a few months before its Western rivals, Russia registered the world’s first vaccine against the Sputnik V coronavirus, which is named after a Soviet satellite. However, the country made the decision before large-scale clinical trials began, raising concern among some experts.
The creators of the Russian preparation claim that its effectiveness is 90 percent. Russia launched a mass vaccination campaign in the country this week.
According to Russian authorities, the vaccine is already registered in a string of countries around the world, including Belarus, Venezuela, Bolivia and Algeria.
“The government only wants to buy vaccines that have already been injected into millions of people and, of course, only vaccines that have been officially tested and approved as safe and effective can be injected in Hungary,” Gulyaso emphasized.
“We hope that the vaccines will be available in Hungary in as many places as possible and in as many quantities as possible,” he said.
On Thursday, Hungary reported 98 new victims of COVID-19, and the total number of deaths in the country exceeded 11,700.
