According to the director of the hospital, Remigijus Mažeika, the patient had no concomitant illnesses and the virus simply irreversibly damaged the man’s lungs.

“The patient was intubated in resuscitation for 35 days. There was simply no response to the treatment and apparently the immune system was one that did not allow to defeat the virus. This is one of the cases where the virus is catastrophic even without comorbidities, “he said.

The hospital manager recalled that the virus is dangerous because it simply overgrowth the lungs with fibrous connective tissue, and a person simply dies when the lung tissue disappears.

“In the absence of specific treatment, these cases occur not only in Lithuania, but also around the world. When viewing a CT lung image, in such cases only insignificant areas of intact tissue are seen. In such cases, only the lung transplant remains, ”said R. Mažeika.

“In the hair” – another patient

Another patient in a similar condition is being treated at the institution and is entering life.

We hope he recovers, but basically they are two identical cases, but this last one can be a success story, it will be a man born a second time. At least we hope so, “he said.

Although the pandemic situation in Lithuania is improving, the situation in Šiauliai hospital remains complicated.

“In the infectious department covidinių The patients have decreased, but there are still a large number of patients in resuscitation, today we have 21. Unfortunately, many of them are still serious. We have two covidins resuscitations and we are not yet planning to reduce anything in the near future. There is still no talk of that, “he emphasized.
