“January 21st. 12 pm 19 min. (11 am 7 min. Lithuanian time) The first power unit of the nuclear power plant is connected to the grid. The planned increase of the power of the first reactor to nominal is being carried out, as foreseen in the program of the pilot industrial stage, ”the report states.

The Ministry indicates that the tests of the systems and equipment of the first power unit will continue.

The first reactor of the Astrava nuclear power plant was disconnected from the electrical system on the night of January 16, when the generator protection system tripped.

The Belarusian Ministry of Energy announced at the time that the security system had been activated by testing the systems and equipment of the first power unit of the nuclear power plant, and that the radiation background in the area of the power plant was “normal”.

When the first reactor went into full operation on January 12, the ministry announced that its static and dynamic tests should last 15 days, and once successfully completed, the suitability of the power unit for industrial use will be approved by the Committee on Admissions.

The first nuclear power plant in Belarus under construction will have two reactors from the Russian VVER project of equal power, almost 1.2 gigawatts each.

The first reactor is scheduled to go into industrial operation in the first quarter of this year and the second reactor is expected to come into operation in the first half of 2022.

The project is financed by a loan from the Russian government. The power plant is being built by Rosatom Corporation.

Lithuania claims that the Astrava nuclear power plant was built near the border without meeting environmental and safety requirements. Minsk rejects these accusations.
