Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher (2014), an Oscar for Best Director, is based on true story, just like his previous film, Man Who Changed Everything (Moneyball 2011), taking viewers into the world of baseball. But Foxcatcher’s management is much more mature. Miller needs a slower pace, more complex psychological characters, dark tones, and a growing tension in silence, all of which place Foxcatcher above others in the director’s filmography, but also in the genre of sports biographies.
Steve Carellis, who played John E. du Pont, is also worth mentioning. The Foxcatcher comedy actor received perhaps the first serious dramatic role Carellis handled without reproach.
Sugrentry / return
Pedro Almodóvar’s films are traditionally full of color, passion and women. Not the women who accompany the men, but themselves who are seen in the background, but real thoroughbred characters, whose stories often become the basis of Almodóvar’s film.
The main characters in Return (2006) are also three women. Raimunda, her daughter Paula and her sister Soledada. The lives of each of them is not covered in roses, and the problems seem to be increasing. It is then that Irene, the mother of Raimunda and Soledada, begins to appear in their lives. Just one detail: Irene is dead.
“Return” is an unexpectedly bright and colorful movie about ghosts. Of course, this does not mean that it will lack a first-class drama, which can squeeze the most sensitive viewers out of tears: There is a long way to go before reconciling with tormented guilt and a crime committed in a desperate situation. However, with what sensitivity and a good dose of humor, the director creates lines of mother-daughter relationship that cannot fail to give and at least a drop of joy.
Kukluksklan Black / BlacKkKlansman
As already written in the recommendation of the Spike Lee film, which was screened at Cinema Spring a year ago and won the Cannes Grand Prix, although it sounds incredible, Black from the Cuckoo Clan (2018) is based on the truest story .
In the 1980s, Ron, the first black officer at the Colorado Springs police station, discovers an advertisement for Kukluksklan in a newspaper and, pretending to be white, dials the specified number. When the time comes to incite racial and ethnic struggles, Flip, Ron’s colleague, who is Jewish, travels to meet with members of the organization …
“Black into the Kukluksklano” is a well-written satire that reflects not only the past, but also current United States politics: Lee attacks many of today’s political leaders. However, this film is also interesting to read as a continuing commentary on the relationship between cinema and racial politics. As for DW Griffith’s controversial “Birth of a Nation”, which has become a classic in cinema, and at the same time recalling the tradition of “explosive exploitation”, the director achieves artistic revenge, as sharp and fun as one would expect from the S. Lee cinema.
