On Tuesday, President Gitanas Nausėda met remotely with members of the Council of Health Experts to discuss the Covid-19 situation in Lithuania, possible deadlines for achieving herd immunity in Lithuania, and preparations for mass vaccination.
The second wave subsides
Simon Krėpšta, the president’s senior adviser on economic and social policy, says there are growing positive signs of control over Covid-19.
“This timid knowledge that was observed in the last meeting of the Council of Health Experts has been confirmed and we can safely say that the peak of the second wave of the pandemic was reached at the end of the year.
Currently, the situation is moving in a positive direction. We are seeing a decrease in the number of people receiving treatment in hospitals, ”S. Krėpšta told reporters on Tuesday.
It is true that the presidency indicates that the quarantine should be released slowly and gradually, depending on the epidemiological situation.
“Seeing the positive signs and the decline of the pandemic, it is very important to ensure that the good news does not change and that we do not return to the situation we saw at the end of December. We support the proposed expert scenarios, which establish that certain steps of operating restrictions can be considered under certain conditions.
We agree that schools, kindergartens and socially vulnerable families are the places to be vacated first, when the epidemiological situation allows, ”added S. Krėpšta.
At the time, Mindaugas Sinkevičius, president of the Association of Lithuanian Municipalities, while acknowledging that the situation with Covid-19 in Lithuania was improving, noted that it was too early to significantly ease the quarantine.
“We cannot say ‘op’ without jumping through the ditch. It is not yet time to relax. Both yesterday and today, what has been discussed with the President, with the Head of Government, the opinion, as I understand it, is that we want to achieve a scenario that we do not have to go back as in the roller coaster, that everything is released on probation, and then we have to stop and our social and economic life, ”M. Sinkevičius told reporters on Tuesday.
Will seek mass immunity
Currently, the most urgent issue, according to the presidency, is public vaccination against Covid-19. According to S. Krėpšta, G. Nausėda sees a great need for a clear objective at the level of the European Union, at which point herd immunity can be achieved.
“It makes sense, in the president’s view, to set a realistic, but ambitious, specific goal for when we can get vaccines to vaccinate two-thirds of the population,” said the president’s adviser.
To achieve this goal, about 2 million must be vaccinated. Lithuanian population.
Mr Nausėda would like to discuss this issue at the European Council on Thursday. According to G. Nausėda’s advisor, it is possible to increase the volume of vaccination, but this requires logistical preparation.
“If we set that goal in mid-summer, it would be that the vaccination rate, which is currently the highest (5-6,000), would increase five to six times and we would have to vaccinate more people every day.” It’s possible, it just requires preparation, “said S. Krėpšta.
According to M. Sinkevičius, municipalities are willing to provide vaccines to people who cannot go to medical institutions.
“Many institutions have more than one car, which is also ready to take blood samples. I imagine it would be like this, having the infrastructure, we will organize a small part of the vaccination in this way ”, commented M. Sinkevičius.
