Just yesterday we announced that Antanas Damulis, the director of the Šilalė District Hospital, who died of COVID-19 at the end of last year, was escorted for eternal rest as if there was no pandemic.
Although the country is currently under quarantine and more than 10 people cannot attend funerals without the relatives of the deceased, witnesses said crowds gathered for the funeral.
The police passed the information to the NVSC
Police say they only found out about the funeral when the media started talking about it. The police compiled the available information and recorded the report.
“Yesterday in the public space, when the Valatka record appeared, when we realized it, we recorded it with us in the reports and we began to collect information about it,” says the Tauragė Police Station TV3.lt.
Police say the collected information has already been sent to the Taurage Department of the National Center for Public Health (NVSC) for further investigation: “The investigation has been sent to the Taurage NVSC, all material collected.”
NVSC will provide an assessment
NVSC Tauragė department tv3.lt reported that it will evaluate the funeral. The police asked for an evaluation.
“We received an inquiry from the Tauragė County Police Chief Commissariat. They ask for an epidemiological assessment because they have already initiated an investigation. We will provide such an epidemiological assessment,” says NVSC’s Taurage Department.
The purpose of the evaluation will be to find out if the security requirements were met during the funeral: “It is very difficult to provide an evaluation when we were not present. General requirements of this type “.
Witnesses appeared
The first information about a possible violation of quarantine conditions was shared by policy reviewer Rimvydas Valatka. In his Facebook post, the critic says he received a call from a person who attended that funeral.
“In Šilala, you in my Šilala, who are you with and where are you going?
A man from Šilalė just called. He asks why nobody wrote about the fact that before the New Year’s funeral, the funeral of the director of the Šilalė District Hospital, a prolific Labor Party actor, who died of a coronavirus, was as massive as in the old days before. to the pact.
The coffin was brought to the church. Almost 200 people accompanied the deceased in the cemetery and elsewhere, and then two priests made their way to the coffin. I say it can’t be, because only 10 people are allowed to say goodbye to the deceased, etc. He says I saw the column myself.
I didn’t really find a description of the funeral anywhere. I would not like to be assigned to those who have been informed and kept quiet. But I also don’t want to believe that such violations are possible. I ask, maybe someone could deny such slander, which probably has not caught on to me? Or maybe a special permission was obtained from the government, and everything here zakonno, as with vaccinations after the blat? Write how it really was and we clarify “, writes R. Valatka in the social network.
The mayor did not attend the funeral
Journalists from the tv3.lt portal contacted the mayor of Šilalė district, Algirdas Meiženis, on Wednesday. The politician confirmed that he also went to say goodbye to the deceased director of the hospital, but cannot say anything about the number of people at the funeral. As the mayor says, he did not attend the funeral itself and that only went to the body.
“The municipality did not participate, I was partially present, it would be easier for me to say about myself. I brought flowers, a candle, an honor, etc. I waited in line not to break procedures, I was not in the coffin for 10-15 minutes. I didn’t go to the cemetery and the paperwork was completed, ”says A. Meiženis.
However, soon during the conversation, the mayor began to use the plural form.
“I was not at that funeral, I did not go to the graves, we took the flowers, the director of the administration was there, some of those people there. Because we had to queue, we waited, ”says the mayor.
After clarifying who the mayor went to the funeral with, A. Meiženis replied that one: “I went alone to pay tribute, but I was also seen by the director of the administration.”
The mayor says he saw about 10 people inside the funeral home.
The funeral home belongs to the municipality
After contacting the UAB Gedmina, a municipal company that organized the body of the director of Šilalė, its manager Donatas Grigalis affirms that all the requirements set by the Government were met during the body.
“On the first day, I can be personally responsible for ensuring that, until our working hours were in person, the staff and I personally monitored the flow of people who came to fire us. In the corridor we strictly follow the requirements of the Ministry of Health, that is, ten people in the corridor, plus the closest relatives ”, comments D. Grigalis.
The director of the company says that if there were more than ten people inside, he would personally ask for them outside.
D. Grigalis says the newly arrived relatives of A. Damulis were informed about the quarantine conditions and had to comply with them.
The director of the company says that the funeral was being prepared and an influx of people was expected.
“Comparing the eternal rest of Antanas Damulis, his notoriety and influence in Šilalė, there were really not as many people as I expected,” says D. Grigalis.
By the time the deceased had to be escorted, more people gathered near the funeral home. As Gregali says, the crowd lined up outside, several people were able to enter the hall. Grigalis says he did not count everyone gathered outside, but estimates that about 80 people attended the funeral.
D. Grigalis also claims that the NVSC was consulted during the organization of the march, they were assured that the march could take place in accordance with the requirements.
“I heard speeches, I’m not sure they went to mass and then to the cemetery. Perhaps more people gathered for the mass and the cemetery, who wanted to say goodbye, but did not want to go to the funeral home knowing the rules ”, says D. Grigalis.
The funeral director also says he heard that more than two priests attended the funeral.
Three priests attended the funeral
Šilalė St. Saulius Katkus, pastor of the Franciscan parish in Assisi, says on tv3.lt that 200 people did not attend the funeral. According to the pastor, this simply would not fit the church.
However, the parish priest confirms the speeches that several priests attended the mass. There are three priests in Šilalė and they all attended the funeral.
“One was sitting in the auditorium, the others were at the altar,” says S. Katkus.
When asked why the funeral of the director of the Šilal una Hospital was an exception and a regular funeral was held, the pastor says relatives have asked for it.
“This man was an active member of the church, singing in the choir. And, of course, loved ones wanted to do it. There is such an unwritten rule that many people want as much respect and common prayer as possible at these funerals, ”says S. Katkus.
NVSC provided recommendations
The NVSC Tauragė department confirms that UAB Gedmina approached specialists and inquired about the funeral. Mr. Gregory was reminded of the quarantine rules and the conditions that must be met.
“He really called and asked for advice on organizing the funeral. One of the topics was the doctor’s funeral. He was informed that no more than ten people can attend the funeral, except for family members and people who provide ritual services, ”says NVSC Taurag Ta Department.
As experts say, the requirements of nasal and oral protective equipment, indoor disinfectant and others were also recalled. NVSC also informed the company that the cemetery is a public space and that a safe distance is required between participants during the funeral.
“We also recommend that the number be reduced,” say NVSC specialists.
The portal tv3.lt recalls that the quarantine regime is currently in force in the country. All the requirements are given in the following illustration.
