The “modern” vaccine is already arriving in Lithuania. It will be distributed immediately to cities and vaccination will begin on priority lists. The vaccination process will begin on Wednesday at the Kaunas Central Post Office.

Kaunas starts vaccination

To date, the vaccine developed by Pfizer has been administered to physicians who work directly with COVID-19 patients, as well as the most seriously ill patients, who may be the hardest hit by the coronavirus. Now the Modernos vaccine is coming to Lithuania. It will begin vaccinating the nursing home staff and residents.

The vaccination process in Kaunas is supervised by the Kaunas Municipal Polyclinic. Its owner told the kauno.diena.lt portal that on Wednesday people will be vaccinated with the Moderna vaccine both in the former Kaunas Central Post Office and in the nursing home.

“This time we get the Moderna vaccine, so we will be vaccinated with it. People will be vaccinated on Wednesday according to the established priority list. This includes staff and residents of social care homes, as well as staff of the fever clinic and the mobile checkpoint. Later, the employees of the laboratories and the National Center for Public Health who travel to the homes will be vaccinated, “said Paulius Kibiša, director of the Kaunas City Polyclinic, about which people in Kaunas will be vaccinated starting tomorrow.

Hundreds of vaccines

He clarified that people will be admitted to the Kaunas Central Post Office building according to the list. Here the employees of the aforementioned institutions will be vaccinated, and the residents of the residences and the people who work on the shift at that time will be assisted by the mobile teams and the personnel of the same.

“We plan to vaccinate about 480 people on Wednesday. Part of the vaccine will travel with mobile teams that will bring the vaccines to the nursing home. Of course, it all depends on the amount of vaccine we receive. However, according to the plan, we should vaccinate about 2.4 thousand people in five working days. people ”, pointed out P. Kibiša about how many vaccines is expected to be used in the last days.

The director of the Kaunas City Polyclinic stated that the premises of the Kaunas Central Post Office were ready for vaccination. There are booths here, so in some of them Kaunas residents will be able to leave their outer clothing, fill out the necessary documents and in other booths they will be vaccinated. Computers were also incorporated, an electronic registration system that regulates the flow of people and other necessary equipment.

Vaccination center

At the last meeting last year, the Kaunas City Council agreed that mass vaccination of Kaunas residents will take place at the Central Post Office, which is currently not in use. This place was chosen because it is well known to Kaunas residents, so people will not have to wander around looking for a vaccination center.

“When planning universal vaccination, we were looking for a place that was not only convenient, but also known to all residents. Today, the old empty building of the Kaunas Central Post Office turned out to be exactly like this. The large space within the building will help ensure procedures that are safe and fast enough to be able to serve as many people as possible during universal vaccination, ”said Paulius Keras, director of the Kaunas City Municipality Emergency Operations Center.

The Kaunas Central Post Office building belongs to Lietuvos Paštas. The Kaunas City Municipality signed a lease with him.

It is planned that after the start of the mass vaccination, residents who want to be vaccinated must register in a specially designed system and arrive at the place at the appointed time. The course of vaccination will be the same as for any other vaccine, but there is already a particularly high level of public interest. Up to 1,400 people could be vaccinated per day in the Kaunas Central Post Office building. If necessary, additional suitable premises would be used. The possibility of installing a second vaccination center on the newly constructed ice rink will be considered as soon as the need arises.
