2021 He showed excellent speed on the Dakar Rally, but experienced a car breakdown early on and dropped out of the race. Vaidotas injury (“Mini”) returned to Lithuania on Thursday.
– What are the emotions after a few days? Did you cover everything?
– Like I said here. Yeah, Al, that sounds pretty bad to me. It seems like it isn’t for me either. At first, I wanted to be like an ostrich crashing into the sand because it was a project of the year and it finished very early. It really beats in my head. After that, we fell asleep and came up with a plan. Of course, it saves me that I have received tremendous support from fans of this entire sport. I didn’t expect so many messages. We also receive financial support. If the next step is successful, I think there should be some additional plan.
– Also mention financial support. On the Patreon platform, you now collect € 1,500 per month. Surprised by such support?
– I was very surprised, because that situation was completely unexpected for both us and the fans, because the Dakar is a long project and after the first stage I expected to get into such a “mess” in my head. That support pushed me to think about the future. I feel a responsibility towards the fans and the partners. We promised the project in January, so I feel in debt, but that doesn’t mean we have to raise our arms. You need to think about how to resolve that situation moving forward. I have the closest plan and we will find out how it will turn out in April, when we go to that stage of the World Cup. I think most of the faces we see in Dakar will meet there. There will be the opportunity to recheck the pace and perhaps capture the result we were hoping for. Those intermediate results were positive during the race, but that’s only part of the story. Consistency is needed all the way.
– If not a secret, did you pay X-raid for a replaced clutch?
– No, I haven’t paid anything for the X-raid so far. Now they continue their work, and at that time we made the only decision that was realistic. When the Dakar is over and they return to Germany, we will sit down and talk calmly. At the moment, we are both sitting in the same boat and we need to find a constructive solution.
– Have you already learned more about the causes of the failure?
– In those cases, whether it is a technical failure or someone else’s mistake, I usually look for lessons and draw conclusions behind closed doors, because such an open search for guilt is not constructive and does not provide any added value. We will try to gather as many conclusions as possible for the future so that this does not happen again, and I can omit more precise scenarios.
– Do you plan to continue driving in Portugal with Paulo Fiuza or, perhaps, with Saulius Jurgelėnas?
– In Portugal, we will definitely go with Paul. This is an already approved scenario.
