“Tight and uncomfortable clothing can cause a variety of health problems: abdominal pain, blood clots, vaginal and bladder infections in women. Men should also pay attention, as wearing tight jeans can cause changes in function Therefore, if you feel pain in the areas of your body that are constantly under pressure, you should go to a medical institution, “emphasizes Laura Vanagaitė, Gintarinės vaistinė pharmacist.
According to her, footwear should not be forgotten either, because it is the feet that have to bear the greatest load every day. The pharmacist advises not to give in to the temptation to buy shoes only for their appearance, because a day later beauty can affect health.
“The wrong footwear is a problem for women, especially those who like to wear high heels, which can cause irreversible damage to the condition of the foot and ankle. Some women tend to buy shoes that are too small or too narrow in the front, and this type of footwear can cause deformities in the toes, ingrown toenails, which make them lie down on the operating table ”, explains L. Vanagaitė.
Clothing should fit the body, not the other way around
According to the pharmacist, one of the most common misconceptions in the population is that if clothing is bought that is too small, it can be “reported”, as if it finally adapted to the body and was adequate. However, during this “notice” period, damage to the body may already have occurred.
“When buying clothes and shoes, it should be taken into account that they correspond to the shape and size of the human body. Do not think that the body has to adapt to the desired size of the garment. I would advise listening to your body. If he signals that you are uncomfortable, listen to him: it can help you maintain good health and feel free and comfortable, ”says L. Vanagaitė.
She advises you to measure yourself accurately before buying shoes or certain clothing. For example, when choosing shoes, the length and width of the foot, when choosing pants, the length of the feet, the circumference of the hips. Clothing sizes vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, so when you look at your usual size, you can also waste time.
“It is recommended to measure shoes and clothes in the first half of the day, because at night sizes can change due to the distribution of liquids or fatigue. The feet or other parts of the body may be slightly swollen, enlarged, and therefore the size may be inaccurate. In addition, one foot can be larger than the other, so when choosing shoes, it is recommended to choose a size based on a larger foot ”, advises the pharmacist.
According to L. Vanagaitė, the damage can be caused not only by jeans that are too tight, but also by compression clothing or underwear that forms body lines.
“Constant pressure can cause nerve damage. But if the eye is still drawn to extremely tight clothing, I would advise choosing stretch fabrics, which will help prevent limbs from dissolving or more serious problems, “he suggests.
Waterproof fabrics and chemicals for clothing
According to the pharmacist, dermatitis is usually caused by wool and synthetic fabrics. It is therefore no wonder that spending the day in a warm wool coat or synthetic shirt can increase sweating or irritate the skin.
“Waterproof clothing or shoes can even develop fungus. This happens because the skin retains all the moisture that is not removed by the wrong tissues. Moisture and heat provide an excellent breeding ground for bacteria. For this reason, it is worth choosing cotton or natural fabrics that allow the air to circulate freely ”, says L. Vanagaitė.
There are even toxic chemicals in used clothing that can enter the body. For example, nearly a decade ago, several prominent brands fell into a whirlwind of scandal when it became clear that their clothing contained harmful formaldehyde. Clothing and black dyes used to color skin also often contain p-phenylenediamine, which is harmful to health.
“These substances not only irritate the skin, but they can also cause anaphylactic shock or cancer. As soon as you notice suspicious body signs, you should see a doctor and throw your clothes out of the closet. The good news is that more and more clothing manufacturers are using ecological fabrics and dyes, ”says the pharmacist.
Grips and abrasions are the result of improper shoes
According to L. Vanagaitė, wearing high heels is associated with chronic pain in the heels, knees, back and shoulders, as well as with a greater probability of straining the ankle or breaking the leg. Avoiding them more than a few times a week puts stress on the feet due to unnatural lifting. Daily walking in high heels can damage the joints of the toes, more often you feel the tension in the legs, which causes pain.
“When a person is standing without shoes, the pressure of the body weight is distributed evenly between the joint and the axis of the spine. This changes dramatically when you wear high heels, as the spine bends forward to maintain the center of gravity, leading to deformities in the waist and spine. However, even flat shoes can cause problems; without strong support, knee, hip or back problems can occur ”, emphasizes the pharmacist in a press release.
L. Vanagaitė says that patients who visit the pharmacy complain of scabs and blisters on their feet caused by wearing too small or uncomfortable shoes. With prolonged delays, the constant rubbing of the feet can irritate the foot joint and later develop into arthritis. If the problem is noticed in time, it can be solved with the help of special foot patches and ointments for the treatment of scabs and abrasions, of course, it is necessary to change shoes.
