Šimonytė: “If the numbers turn out to be encouraging, don’t be too bold”

According to the prime minister, now she can say one good news and another, not so good news.

“The good news is that there are different interpretations. My, probably position, forces me to be very careful. Therefore, I am very careful that we have one or another number that looks better than a few weeks ago.

In order for us to make sure this is a trend, we need two full weeks. Therefore, we will only be able to assess the trend next Sunday, which we have already declared. Then we can say that we are moving in a specific direction.

So I would suggest that even if someone finds the numbers quite encouraging, don’t be too bold. There are other circumstances that also relate to mutations in the virus you are reading about and seeing how soon after the release of quarantine conditions in Ireland they had to be quickly closed again and the number of cases is growing in numbers that we have not. seen and we would like not to see. Therefore, we will assess that situation very carefully, “said I. Šimonytė in the Seimas.

The prime minister announced what she would do next Monday. He promises to use the Board of Experts and take into account the algorithms they have developed when making decisions.

“The expert board was asked to develop algorithms. How can the less risky activities be selected for those activities in a safer stage, perhaps to start working under certain requirements?

We work safe. We see problems. We don’t want people to shut down more than necessary. But now is not the time when we can talk specifically about dates, when we can launch something, ”said I. Šimonytė.

Šimonytė: “I am very careful with the situation”

We remind you that on Wednesday I. Šimonytė also told reporters that it is difficult to assess whether Lithuania has already experienced the Covid-19 spike. He said that we will see the situation more clearly only after two weeks, when it will be possible to talk about changes to the quarantine. The prime minister has yet to figure out how to ease the quarantine.

The quarantine has been introduced in Lithuania until January 31 inclusive. According to Prime Minister I. Šimonytė, it will be possible to talk about any changes to the quarantine no earlier than January 17.

“I am very cautious about the situation, because we had a few days where the numbers seemed quite favorable compared to some previous numbers. But today again the numbers are significant enough. This, of course, is related to changes in the volumes of proof that they have dropped significantly over the holiday period.

I can’t tell which direction we are moving today, if we have already peaked and are stabilizing and moving down, or not yet. Therefore, I think it is essential that we wait this week and next. And only at the end of next week, after two full weeks of work, I think we will be able to talk about what the dynamic is, ”I. Šimonytė told reporters on Wednesday.

Presidency: the peak may be over

At the time, Simonas Krėpšta, the senior adviser to President Gitanas Nausėda in Lithuania, said on Wednesday that the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic may have passed, but the situation in the country remains difficult.

“There is a possibility that the peak of the pandemic has passed, but we are still in a difficult situation,” the adviser told reporters on Wednesday after the president’s meeting with health experts.

Mr Krėpšta stressed that no definitive conclusions could yet be drawn and that this assumption would have to be confirmed next week.

“Of course we had a holiday period introducing so-called extra data noise {…} during the holiday weeks, fewer tests were done and this led to some reduction in the number of new cases,” he said.

The president’s adviser noted that so far “quarantine requirements have been relaxed” are still a long way off.

It is recalled that this week the Council of Government Experts made proposals to the government on how the quarantine requirements could be tightened or relaxed. A member of the think tank says that while it is difficult to predict from the jump infection curve these days, optimistically, the first releases could be expected as early as February, and we could already have minimal restrictions in the summer.

The experts pointed out scenarios A, B, C and D that would allow the imposition of quarantine restrictions. According to the group of experts, the current peak of coronavirus infections and the epidemiological situation should gradually improve.

“Therefore, we propose to the Government of the Republic of Lithuania to start considering the application of social bubbles in Lithuania. Link the stages of implementation of the social bubble with the epidemiological situation and the prepared quarantine levels ”, says the expert’s recommendation.

As one of the members of the expert council, Professor Ramunė Kalėdienė, told the tv3.lt news portal, we still live in the conditions of this scenario. Still, experts, even in the strictest conditions, suggest a little to ease the ratio of people.

Professor R. Kalėdienė said that due to the holidays and the different scope of testing, the curve for the number of infections is jumping, so it is still difficult to assess the real situation of the pandemic. Still, according to the interlocutor, a clearer picture will emerge this week or in the coming days.

“My optimistic opinion would be that the quarantine is probably working. Because we also see this by looking at the mobility data, people actually move a lot less and I think the quarantine measures are really sufficient at this time,” said R. Kalėdienė.

Debates about introducing a state of emergency or curfew have been heard several times in the public sphere in recent weeks. According to the professor, such cardinal measures are not necessary.

“In the current situation, I would not really tighten the measures. It is important that we continue to take into account and comply with the current restrictions. If we see that the acceleration of the differential in 14 days will definitely decrease, less than one, it can be assumed that we are moving gradually towards that best scenario, ”said R. Kalėdienė.
