“First of all, we must thank the Lithuanian Episcopal Conference for the fact that the services were not public and are not even public now, even after the government tightened the quarantine. The Episcopal Conference decided not to hold services and I think that that decision was very local and very timely and we really saw it as a sign of solidarity with the local government, ”the Prime Minister said when asked about the Bishops’ decision on Wednesday.
However, he went on to say that in the absence of good news of an improvement in the situation, he would expect a review of this decision.
“In other words, an extension of the period to be more similar to the period of restrictions imposed by the Government. For perhaps the secular government does not refer to the ecclesiastical, just as the ecclesiastical does not refer to the secular, but the solidarity of the two powers, as it were in such circumstances, is of the utmost importance. I hope that since the renewal has not yet taken place, I hope this decision will be reviewed, ”said I. Šimonytė.
The Episcopal Conference of Lithuania has announced that it will resume public services from next Monday, January 11.
It has been decided that the church will have at least 10 square meters per person, maintaining a distance of two meters between people.
On Tuesday, Health Minister Arūnas Dulkys did not comment on the decision to renew services.
Under the current quarantine regime, the government recommends abstaining from religious rites or organizing them remotely.
Exceptions are for funerals only, but are only possible by limiting the number of participants.
