At the time, the chairman of the Seimas Health Affairs Committee, Antanas Matulas, said that he doubted that R. Petraitis should step down as director of the NVSC, as he says he is insightful about the mistakes and inappropriate decisions of the management of the former Ministry of Health.

“I would go instead, but I understand that he thinks differently and as a minister I have imposed a disciplinary sanction on him for certain work not done. We tried to help as much as possible, but then we saw that it was really difficult. Maybe a person is tired, because the work has been extremely difficult since February, ”A. Veryga told LRT radio on Wednesday.

When asked why he did not fire R. Petraitis himself, if he was not satisfied with his job and competence as a manager, A. Veryga explained that it is not easy to fire a career civil servant and that he did not want to overburden the ministry’s lawyers with additional work during the pandemic.

Perhaps a person is tired, because since February work has been extremely difficult, – said A.Veryga.

“Dismissals for career officials, this type of institution is not a kind of private company, where the owners come and say” collect things and leave. ” Each violation, as the manager himself has said in the media, must be recorded, proven, it also takes time. In the heat of the pandemic, overloading the ministry’s specialists, lawyers with working groups, evaluating violations, is the last thing you do, hope is lost, ”said A.Veryga, vice president of the Health Affairs Committee of the Seimas.

Conservative President Antanas Matulas also criticized the head of the NVSC for his lack of competence and wondered why the center had not verified paper hospital records of human deaths from COVID-19 with data from eHealth for a long time.

According to A.Matul, R.Petraitis, director of the NVSC, “plus a creator, a theoretician, he can be commissioned to create strategies, reports, but as a manager he is not strong.” However, when asked whether R. Petraitis should resign, Matul said he was skeptical.

“I doubt that it is necessary to assess all the circumstances, during the pandemic the institution, which was very busy, did not have adequate assistance, illogical decisions were made, (…) the actions of the ministry were inadequate, (…) delegating some functions to the center, what they worked day and night, were illogical and that is why apparently those functions were performed poorly, ”said A. Matulas.

According to him, although the Seimas did not approve the merger of the Center for Communicable Diseases and AIDS (ULAC), Minister A.Veryga continued to make decisions about some of the functions of said center, including the immediate transfer of the information system to the NVSC. As R. Petraitis, head of NVSC, mentioned, ULAC did not transfer the information system, the decisions were appealed to the court, so the center had to create its own new information system.

Health Minister Arūnas Dulkys and Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė have criticized NVSC leaders for improperly organized activities and inaccurate COVID-19 death statistics.

Giedrius Nariūnas, deputy director of NVSC, resigned on Tuesday, the reason for his resignation is unknown. Petraitis said the deputy did not state the reason, but said his area of responsibility was related to IT systems and their implementation.

NVSC Chief R. Petraitis has submitted written responses to the Ministry of Health, after which Minister A. Dulkys promises to make decisions regarding the NVSC Chief.
