Something surprises Dakar participants after coronavirus tests in Saudi Arabia

Everyone had to do the first test in Lithuania, no more than 72 hours before leaving for Saudi Arabia. Then, after arriving in the country, they waited 48 hours of self-isolation, after which the COVID-19 test was organized by the Dakar organizers.

The latter takes place where the Dakar will begin in early January, at the Royal Stadium, whose construction was completed last year. As life boils at the entrances to the stadium, a city is built to start the Dakar Rally, the space for the bivouac – the Dakar Rally Camp – is cleared and tests are organized in the stadium itself.

To avoid the gathering of the Dakar Rally participants, fences were installed next to the boxes through which the necessary tools for the test were issued, regulating both the safety distance and the flow rates. There are many ushers who point out where you can go and where you can’t.

The procedure is not complicated: each visitor requests a passport, copies their data. Then, on a separate sheet, stick an identical sticker to the bag with the dispensed supplies, request the email address to which the coronavirus test results will be sent.

The tests are done in another room. The latter is divided into independent “cells” separated by screens. Even some athletes can be tested at the same time in a relatively small room.

The test itself is much easier than in Lithuania, because the samples are not taken from the nostrils and throat, but only from one nostril. It is true that a thin stick is inserted through the nasal cavity as it is “pampered” as needed, this ensures that enough material will be taken for examination. However, Lithuanians are patient: they did not shrink much and did not wipe their tears after the test. Furthermore, this is not the first attempt. For example, Antanas Juknevičius and Darius Vaičiulis have studied together more than 10 times.

I was fascinated by the state system

However, Lithuanians were most impressed not by the efforts of the Dakar organizers to create the safest environment possible at the rally, but by the Saudi Arabian state health system and the way the coronavirus test is conducted a the population.

The country wants to investigate more than 50 percent. population, so all coronavirus tests here are completely free. Lithuanians said that after trying to take the test, they wanted to pay for it, which only resulted in hand washing and an emphasis that the test was completely free not only for locals, but foreigners as well.

It is true that a passport is required to take the exam. The data of each examinee is stored in the system, and it is possible to find out the result of the test using two intelligent applications. They need to register and as soon as the results come in, they will be visible immediately.

Although research is free for everyone, uninterrupted research is impossible. The test can be done 4 to 5 times a month, every few days.
