Republican Luke Letlow was elected in Louisiana’s 5th District and was due to be sworn in on Sunday.
“With the sadness of the loss, the First Lady of Louisiana (@FirstLadyOfLA) and I extend our condolences to the family of Congressman-elect Luke Letlow for losing the fight against COVID-19,” wrote Louisiana Governor John Edwards, On twitter.
“My heart aches that he will not be able to serve our people as a member of the House of Representatives, but I am even sadder for his loving family,” Edwards wrote.
L. Letlow left his wife Julia Barnhill Letlow and two young children.
“The family is grateful for the prayers and support of the past few days, but asks to respect their privacy during this difficult and unexpected time,” the family said in a statement to the US media. “Another family announcement about the funeral will be published later.”
Edwars said he had ordered the flags to be dropped at half mast on the day of the funeral.
Mr. Letlow reported on December 18 that his COVID-19 test came back positive and that he was isolated at home. Three days later, he was hospitalized.
L. Letlow is the first member of the United States Congress to die from COVID-19.
The United States has been experiencing a worrying wave of coronavirus in recent months. By Monday night, 19,526,228 cases of COVID-19 infection and 337,918 deaths had been registered in the country. The United States ranks first in the world in terms of the number of infected and dead.
