“Today in Colorado, we discovered the first case of COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7. It is the same variant that was discovered in the UK, “State Governor Jared Polis wrote on Twitter.

He added official reports from his office and state health officials that the new strain of coronavirus had been detected in “a man in his 30s who is currently isolated in Elbert County and has not traveled anywhere.”

The report indicates that the person had no close contacts, but the situation continues to be monitored “very closely.” Officials try to identify other potential cases of infection by tracing contacts.

The Washington Post reported that the incident in Colorado was the first known case of this variant of coronavirus detected in the United States. Last weekend two people infected with this strain of coronavirus were identified in Canada; these were the first cases of B.1.1.7 infection in North America.

The new variant of coronavirus is a concern for professionals, as preliminary studies suggest that this pathogen may be much more contagious than the one widespread to date.

In Britain and some other countries, more than 3,000 cases of a new strain of coronavirus have already been detected in Europe and around the world, according to data from the European Union health agency, ECDC.

At that time, more than 300 cases of another variant of coronavirus were detected in South Africa. These strains have already been found in Europe, but all the patients, two in the UK and one in Finland, are people who have returned from South Africa.
