Approximately 324 deaths from coronavirus (COVID-19) and 480 deaths from other causes were reported, but the deaths were from coronavirus. This information was published by the Ministry of Health, and the data was obtained by comparing the October-December statistics from the NVSC and the Registry Center.

The NVSC explained that the information related to the deaths is provided by medical institutions. Therefore, the current situation due to the high number of unreported deaths is due to possible delays or non-transmission of information from medical institutions.

Information from medical institutions is trusted

How Delfi.lt Justina Petravičienė, Public Information Specialist in the Vilnius Department of the NVSC, informed the NVSC that, according to the current procedure, the NVSC receives information on deaths from medical institutions by submitting a form provided for this purpose.

“Given the workload of medical institutions, we estimate that it may have been the case that reporting was delayed or that information on COVID-19 deaths was not provided to the NVSC.

This means that certain discrepancies were not the fault of the NVSC. No NVSC diagnoses both death and, for example, recovery, so the information provided by medical institutions is trusted. All information that we have received from medical institutions has been compiled by our specialists and we report it to the public on a daily basis, ”said the NVSC.

Adjusts with medical institutions

According to J. Petravičienė, following information about excessive deaths, which could possibly be related to the COVID-19 disease, NVSC immediately took proactive steps to discover the situation and determine if the medical institutions reported the deaths to NVSC correctly, as it should. .

NVSC on December 10. wrote to the Records Center requesting data on all COVID-19 deaths recorded in the Electronic Health Services and Cooperation Infrastructure Information System, providing detailed information.

We have received such information. Each case is individual and must be evaluated on its own merits to provide the public with definitive, accurate and clear information. As a result, we are also working with medical institutions. That should be done soon. As we have said, the public will be informed about this separately, ”said the NVSC response on unaccounted for deaths.

The issue of missing deaths was discussed Tuesday during a remote meeting between Health Minister Arūnas Dulkis and NVSC chief Robertas Petraitis. A. Dulkys instructed the NVSC director to submit a detailed written assessment of the situation, upon receipt, the necessary action will be taken.

There have been discrepancies in the past, but this time they are very large

The former Minister of Health Aurelijus Veryga assured that in the past there had been certain discrepancies in the statistics, since sometimes the data was delayed or was impossible to collect. However, he said, if the difference is 800 cases, it can no longer be attributed to high workloads.

“What happened to the data should be explained by the NVSC itself. I realize that there are a few dozen cases that can be lost somewhere, miscalculated, but when there are a few hundred, there are differences of several hundred of deaths, that’s wrong. There have been data issues in the past, but usually when we commissioned IT professionals to figure it out, they usually caught the extremes and found everything, and there were no big differences.

Usually there were days, weeks, something late to sum up and the like. However, I really don’t remember how big differences there would have been, “said A. Veryga.
