According to the mayor, such a decision may affect hundreds of Lithuanians who work in the sanatorium, they have not yet received help from the central government.
“It is absurd, it is unfortunate that ordinary people are suffering from some kind of international political affairs. The sanatorium not only cannot continue its activities, it cannot pay people’s wages, it cannot pay for heating, water and other things. What is the sanatorium for? I would say that if some other Belarusian oligarchs are developing some kind of business or other things … people are resting here, and 90% of all activities were children. Taking such measures is something which is incompatible with common sense, “R. Malinauskas told BNS on Tuesday.
“We must also be aware of the European level and assess the situation. During my 20 years of work, I have not heard that any politician has come here on vacation, “he added.
A total of 393 people work in the sanatorium, about 350 of them are Lithuanian citizens.
According to R. Malinauskas, most of the employees live in Druskininkai and not receiving a salary from New One would be a painful loss for them. The mayor claims that the sanatorium has not yet received help from the central government.

Swedbank froze the accounts of the sanatorium this month due to sanctions imposed by the EU on the Central Economic Council of the president of Belarus. The sanatorium functions as a public body and the agricultural board is a shareholder of the sanatorium.
The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that it is currently clarifying what assistance can be provided to Lithuanians working in the sanatorium.
“We understand that several hundred Lithuanian citizens working for this Belarusian company in Druskininkai are in a difficult situation. We are currently explaining whether there are opportunities to help the Lithuanian people who have suffered while working for the regime of Belarusian President Aliaksandr Lukashenko. However, without the end of the protests and their illegal repression, the risk for companies that work directly with the regime is growing, ”said Foreign Minister Vytautė Šmaižytė, spokesperson for the Foreign Minister.
