During the New Year, the municipalities of the cities of Vilnius and Kaunas intend to restrict people’s access to festive Christmas trees and reject fireworks in one place.

Even before Christmas, the Vilnius City Council announced that it would renounce New Year’s fireworks and physically enclose Christmas trees in the Cathedral and City Hall squares.

“Kaunas will limit people’s access to City Hall Square and abandon traditional fireworks, but by encouraging people to stay home and avoid visiting public spaces, the city aims to contribute to the festive atmosphere in current conditions and provide fireworks at unannounced locations closer to residential neighborhoods. ” Agnė Augonė, Head of the Department of Culture of the Kaunas City Municipality.

According to her, there could be up to ten locations where fireworks will be fired.

The municipal report states that, unlike usual, the New Year’s party at Kaunas City Hall, which has attracted large crowds, will not take place.

“In order to guarantee the safety of the population and take care of public health, on New Year’s Eve it is planned to restrict access to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento by physical means for both pedestrians and cars. This will continue from December 31 at 8 pm to 1 am on January 1, “the report read.

Police Commissioner General Renatas Požėla announced on Monday after the meeting of the Government Emergency Commission that municipalities will be offered to abandon the New Year’s fireworks and put out the Christmas trees.

“We strongly believe that there should be no centralized fireworks firing. Another proposal that would discourage people to choose near Christmas trees, in central locations, is to physically turn off the Christmas trees during that New Year’s consent so that they do not shine or invite to choose, “said the official.

“Another thing is the fencing of the central Christmas trees, the traffic restriction,” he said.
