Vice Minister: It is not worth waiting for a massive vaccination against Covid-19 in the first quarter of next year

After vaccination of the country’s first medical personnel began on Sunday, more vaccination actions were discussed on Monday in a discussion started by Laurynas Kasčiūnas, chairman of the Seimas National Defense and Security Committee (NSGC).

“As for the vaccination stages, based on the way we view the schedules of the only approved Pfizer vaccine, they really change, but based on the current arrival in Lithuania, we really cannot expect a mass vaccination in the first trimester,” Ž. Simonaitytė.

It is true that he pointed out that the information on vaccine receipt schedules and new vaccine registries is very dynamic and constantly evolving. As a result, he spoke. Simonaitytė, plans may change.

According to the SAM deputy minister, all medical staff working with Covid-19 patients can be expected to be vaccinated in January: doctors, nurses, volunteers working in hospitals.

“Another group whose vaccination would begin would be nurses, nursing home staff and residents. Here we have one of the highest risk groups, we have many diseases, a terrible statistical indicator of this group that even about 50 percent. Members of this group, if they get sick, their illness usually ends with death, ”Ž said. Simonaitytė.

He also said that SAM has a team of experts brought together by the Government to make its recommendations.

“Other groups are older people with chronic diseases. There are other smaller groups that are really very important. The Board of Experts helps position. These are people who, due to their medical condition, such as a transplant, need a blood transfusion. periodically, they have diabetes, they need to undergo procedures and must visit health care centers regularly for their other conditions. As a result, they face a higher risk and must be vaccinated soon enough, “said the deputy minister.

Committee chair L. Kasčiūnas asked Ž. Simonaitytė, why Lithuania’s vaccination plans are so different from those of the USA, where mass vaccination is planned in the near future.

In turn, Ž. Simonaitytė responded that the first small shipment of BioNTech and Pfizer vaccines to the states was only symbolic.

“The entire program continues to travel on a pro-rata basis. Naturally, this principle applies to each member state in proportion to how much the EU receives,” said Ž. Simonaitytė, emphasizing that the additional timetable also depends on the EU’s negotiating opportunities.

Manager of the Santara Clinic: We have several patients with suspected Covid-19 strain

General Director of Clinicas Santara prof. Feliksas Jankevičius, speaking about the fastest-spreading strain of Covid-19 infection recorded in several countries, said that it is not yet known whether such a strain causes a more severe course of the disease.

“We don’t have that data yet. Hopefully, it will not be resistant to vaccines. What is the risk for Lithuania? Its transmission rate is higher, so it can be expected that if the variety spreads more widely, it would lead to a higher number of infections. Of course, the number of hospitalizations can increase significantly, which would be a very heavy burden, even higher than now, “said the professor.

According to him, it is necessary to try to identify cases of coronavirus mutation as soon as possible and prevent this, identify contacts and vaccinate the population.

F. Jankevičius emphasized that due to the threat of the virus strain, the health status of long-distance drivers is being monitored.

Several of them, the professor admitted, are investigating the Santara clinic for a possible strain of coronavirus.

“We have identified a few people in the Santara clinics today; there are 7 cases of this type that could be suspected. We are doing a sequencing, I do not have final studies yet to see if that mutation will really confirm it. If it confirms, and we find out today or tomorrow, then we will look for contacts and we will try to prevent the mutation from spreading ”, said the head of the clinics.

He stressed that the clinics have a contract with Thermo Fisher Scientific, which will conduct the final tests to make sure these patients are actually infected with the Covid-19 infection.
