On Thursday night, US software maker Microsoft said more than 40 of its business customers around the world were affected by the malware, which security experts say allows attackers to seamlessly connect to government systems, networks electricity and other critical infrastructure.

“A lot of effort has gone into using third-party software that can essentially embed malicious code into US government systems.

“These efforts have been great and now, I think, it’s pretty clear that the Russians were involved in this activity,” Pompeo told The Mark Levin Show on Friday.

According to the president of Microsoft, Brad Smith, around 80 percent of the customers affected by the attack are in the United States and the rest in Belgium, the United Kingdom, Canada, Israel, Mexico, Spain and the United Arab Emirates.

“There is no doubt that the number of victims and their geography will continue to grow,” Smith said, citing US officials who had expressed concern this week about the severity of the recent cyber attack.
