All containers in the city are controlled in real time
In recent years, Klaipeda has invested in advanced technology solutions for waste management and container service. Antanas Rukša, Head of Ecoservice Klaipėda’s Regional Waste Collection Administration, estimates that by 2020, the vast majority of mixed municipal waste containers will be replaced and all containers in the city will be newly labeled.
“Each container is assigned only one identification number, which is represented by a label on the container (with the number and the barcode) and encoded with RFID tags. These markers are recognized and scanned by the most advanced technologies in our cars in Europe, operating at low frequencies and at a very short distance, according to a press release.
The latest technological solutions are used to record the exact service time, location and other important factors of a specific container in real time. If, for some reason, the container cannot be serviced by the carriers, such as inaccessible or finding inappropriate waste, the staff captures a photograph and automatically submits the data to the system. A 360-degree image capture system in cars also helps to do this.
We can monitor all the information related to the container service together with the Klaipeda Region Waste Management Center (KRATC) and solve the problems immediately. Therefore, the technological solutions used not only guarantee additional control of the service, but also transparency in the waste management system, ”says A. Rukša.
The expert explains that if inappropriate waste is found in the containers, an informative message is placed on them indicating the reason why the containers were not emptied. Additionally, the new labeling and planned introduction of the Ecoservice Eco app will allow residents to conveniently and accurately find out how many times their waste has been shipped per month or year for years to come, as well as monitor service hours. It will also be possible to check the peculiarities of the classification and other relevant information related to waste management.
5 times more classified industrial waste
According to the expert, this year a lot of attention has also been paid to educating companies and institutions on the correct management and classification of waste. Not a single company, within which economic waste is generated, has received reports of the need to separate mixed municipal waste from industrial waste or secondary raw materials.
“We should be glad that we all learned to sort together, improve processes and improve results. In this way, together we have achieved that the mixed municipal waste landfill in 2020. Almost 29 percent was delivered. Less than in previous years.” , – calculates A. Rukša.
According to the representative from Ecoservice Klaipėda, instead of being disposed of with mixed household waste, industrial or economic waste goes to sorting bases, where it is sorted and sent for recycling or transferred to special factories for energy.
A new way to collect and dispose of green waste
In 2020, the green waste collection and accumulation procedure in Klaipėda also changed. In the past, this type of waste traveled to special large-capacity containers in the city, but it was often used for other purposes: the containers contained furniture, bulky waste and others.
“Employees of green waste containers contaminated with inappropriate waste could not be removed, so they either remained full or waste accumulated around them. This not only cast a shadow over the city’s image, but also caused annoyance and dissatisfaction from the own neighbors.
With the accumulation and disposal of green waste in big bags this year, these problems have been solved in Klaipeda. The collection of green waste in big bags has been especially useful for educational institutions, communities with green areas or parks. “Green waste can be collected and removed at a convenient time, regardless of the employment of transporters, so the impression of illegal landfills has decreased significantly, so the population is happier,” says the expert.
For those who do not have the opportunity or desire to make green compost and food waste, A. Rukša also reminds them of another alternative. Specific 240 liter containers for green waste can be provided to anyone who wishes. By choosing this method of green waste storage, mixed municipal waste bins don’t fill up as quickly.
2021 – container washing and disinfection
During the first quarantine, taking care of the safety of the population, the containers were further washed and disinfected in Klaipeda. According to A. Rukša, already from 2021 it is planned to take care of the container washing and disinfection in Klaipėda throughout the year and wash not only general-purpose containers, but also the containers of residents of individual farms.
“Using modern technologies, we can wash containers extremely efficiently, quickly and conveniently. The work is carried out with silent machines with a high-pressure washing system and special means that destroy biodegradable substances and viruses especially quickly and safely. The wash water is heated to 45 degrees centigrade, the equipment is filled with detergents and disinfectants to remove all dirt during the wash. It is especially convenient that it is not necessary to transport containers anywhere, everything is done in the same container parking place. It is possible to wash and service 100 to 150 containers per day with specialized vehicles, as both container washing and disinfection and waste collection are done at the same time, ”says A. Rukša.
According to A. Rukša, public health specialists recommend washing and disinfecting containers at least twice a year, after the winter and summer seasons. During the warm season, perishable waste in containers causes unsanitary conditions and emits unpleasant odors. Meanwhile, in the cold season, with seasonal illnesses prevailing and the coronavirus still rampant, a safer environment is needed on a regular basis.
“To ensure the safest possible use of the containers for Klaipeda residents, it is expected to regularly wash and disinfect all containers in the city. This project is already being considered in the municipality and we hope that with its approval we can start working after the holidays ”, A. Rukša shares the vision for next year.
