The woman was born and raised in Utena and has worked as a nurse at Utena Hospital for 30 years. She is currently caring for patients in the children’s ward and is happy to help the children recover. And in her free time after work, the woman relaxes by immersing herself in postcard production.

He discovered his passion for creativity in an unexpected way.

Ilona and her husband raised two beautiful children who are already creating their own lives: the son lives and works abroad and the daughter is a professional photographer in Lithuania. This is what the woman says before starting to talk about making postcards, because it was because of her daughter’s passion for photography that Ilona herself discovered her creative vein five years ago.

“My daughter organized an artistic photography exhibition at the Casa de la Cultura in Utena and asked for invitations. Going to the stationery, I bought colored paper, ribbons, a couple of bangs, and made the invitations the way I looked beautiful, I had no experience and no understanding.

These were my first jobs. With all the remaining paperwork, I came up with the idea of making Christmas cards for my loved ones and friends. Somehow I really enjoyed the process itself, received such “warm” greetings.

Both friends and loved ones liked them. Friends even started asking for a reward to make commemorative postcards for birthdays, weddings. This is how my individual activity was born ”, the woman recalls.

Both greetings and home decoration.

Ilona’s stunning postcards are created using the scratch-off technique. The woman says she learned this increasingly popular way of crafting by watching various YouTube channel posts and lessons on the social network Instagram.

“It just came to our knowledge then. Later, I got involved in the scrambling community, I also participated in foreign and Lithuanian trainings, where the creators shared their experiences and created their own postcards.

So while learning a bit, I bought all kinds of tools, I ship them from all over the world. I kept learning, practicing, making many postcards, improving and perfecting, discovering my style, what kind of postcards I like to create the most. My postcards are in 3D, it’s both a greeting and a home decoration, ”says Utena’s golden manipulator.

Scraping is an increasingly popular form of craft

Scratching is most often described as a way to decorate photos and your albums using scrapbooks. However, envelopes, book tabs, and postcards can also be decorated by scratching, which is what Ilona does. And what tools are needed to create such exclusive postcards?

“The postcard first needs a base, a sheet of white paper. And then I already need colored paper, decorative, lace, ribbons, glue, cut-out drawings, which I also look for, I print.

There are also details cut with a special paper cutter, butterflies, flowers, brochures, wooden shapes, as well as I glue details of a model, etc. I make a lot of flowers with my own hands, ”says Ilona.

Expensive hobby

According to the woman, such a hobby is an expensive pleasure, because to engage in scratching requires a number of measures:

“Decorative paper is expensive, as is design paper, various tools such as a cutting machine, cutting molds, dies, die inks, stamping techniques and many other tools.

The man jokes that “your hobby is at least worth it, and whoever fishes sometimes has to go to the supermarket.”

Ilona says that to buy as many tools as possible and not hurt the family budget, she sells her postcards, but due to the hectic pace of work she doesn’t always have time for creativity.

“As I have a permanent job at the hospital, my free time is limited and those who want to surprise their loved ones with my handmade postcard have to request it well in advance,” he says.

A long creative process

And how are these postcards made? According to Ilona, it is a long process, the most important of which is to start thinking about what occasion and what kind of person will give the postcard as a gift, what are the hobbies and free time of that person, and then you can execute your Imagination and creativity.

“First of all, it all starts with the idea and the thought of what I want to show. Even before I start the postcard, I think a lot about what I mean by it, I choose the images and draw the sketches.

When I start to make a postcard, I choose the main image, then I combine the colors, I cut everything, I put the main elements, flowers, leaves, butterflies … It is a long and creative process.

The main element of the postcard dictates what I will put, but I never know what the end result will be, I just feel it. We are all similar in something but different. Sometimes it takes a day to make a postcard, sometimes two ”, says the interlocutor.

Impressive postcards surprise more than one

Ilona shared the photos of her postcards on a social media group, where people post posts about the Christmas decorations they created. The woman’s record received a thousand “trustees”, and comments were filled with praise one after another.

“After receiving so many compliments and the most beautiful comments, the feeling is indescribable, very good, warm, rewarding. Even the family members had a hard time believing the works I had created here, but they were delighted and supported me from the beginning.

That’s why people like what I do and that motivates me. I’m happy to have discovered a hobby that also makes others happy, ”smiles Ilona.

Postcard: a wonderful Christmas gift

Ilona says she notices that people buy postcards less often and only on more important occasions, such as baptisms, anniversaries or weddings. According to her, such a gesture of greeting is completely forgotten:

“In the past, a postcard almost always congratulated on a simple birthday, now I think it is less, modern society is in a hurry, computerized, many times people use virtual greetings during birthdays. Oh, but how nice to receive a greeting card and what a memory it is. “

However, the woman is pleased that many are sending more and more postcards for Christmas. According to Ilona, it can be a great gift that shows attention to a loved one:

“The popularity of postcards is revived a lot during Christmas, many people also send abroad, they want to show attention and remember themselves.

A postcard is a wonderful Christmas gift. And if it’s still handwritten … Your loved one thought of you, took the time, and wrote you a greeting.

For me, it is very beautiful, warmly happy. I always write the congratulations by hand and offer them to others. During the Christmas period, I wrote and sent many postcards. It’s good to share the heat. “

Christmas greetings from a distance

Christmas is Ilona’s most anticipated holiday and, according to her, brings even more creative inspiration. And although this year we will know the holidays differently, she urges you not to forget your loved ones and to greet them from a distance by sending them a postcard with the greeting you wrote:

“The waiting period for Christmas is wonderful, we try to decorate the house as soon as possible so that we can stay in that comfort and look forward to the holidays as long as possible. Oh, and creating for me is a great inspiration. The light of the bulbs and candles gives peace, comfort, think how well you live, how beautiful there is around.

Trying to be all together with the family during Christmas is the most precious moment. This year will be different for all of us. I would like to wish that everyone does not forget about their loved ones and friends, write a greeting card and send, surprise your loved one. You will see how much joy and warmth you will give to a person ”.
