Skvernel: it is impossible to ensure the control of new quarantine measures

According to S. Skvernel, the conditions when the cities were closed during the first quarantine were exceptional.

“It just came to our attention then. Sure, wishes, goals may be good, but Easter weekend was a public holiday, no work was required. However, those three days were difficult in terms of material resources and humans “. Delphi S. Skvernelis said.

S. Skvernel: It would have been enough to limit family communication or recommend creating bubbles.

He said that police officers would not only have to stop people traveling by car, but also verify the purpose of their trips.

“It is no longer the duty of a person to show that they are working, it is a state institution, it has records and must do so. I believe that this measure may have been indicative, since another measure was introduced that prohibits communication with more than one family farm. This is practically the same and eliminates the meaning of that first road control measure, “said the former prime minister.

As a result, said S. Skvernelis, it would have been enough for the new government to restrict communication between family farms or recommend the creation of so-called family bubbles, and this would automatically reduce movement in cities.

“It is possible to mobilize the entire internal affairs system, use the army as much as possible in peacetime, but we can do it for a short period of time, it would make sense to apply that measure to the Christmas period, then those days can still be endured, but until January 31, I have a hard time imagining it, ”said S. Skvernelis.

The politician also stressed that the government must take into account people who live alone. Such residents, according to S. Skvernelis, often need the help of family members, children.

“It is declared that 400 thousand. there are single people in Lithuanian households. What does it mean to them if they cannot visit their elderly parent? He can’t even bring the necessary tools, food, money from Vilnius for, say, Šilutė and leave it at the door, ”the former prime minister noted.

Borrowing will have its results: the consequences can be seen later

Skvernel also said that the introduction of such restrictions would cause huge losses for the business.

“If the rulers plan to borrow more and make the public debt exceed 7%. GDP, it will be a tragedy in 2022, when the budget project will have to be presented “, S. Skvernelis emphasized.

According to him, businesses such as hairdressers, where only two people are in contact, could operate in compliance with all security measures. According to the former prime minister, after the introduction of the quarantine in early November, the spread of the virus in those places was not recorded.

Finally, S. Skvernel emphasized that any prohibition or recommendation must be followed by the public and only then the coronavirus will not spread.

“Those measures that were already introduced during the second quarantine on November 4. are certainly sufficient if society adheres to them. Without securing those measures to think that we will introduce them even more stringent and then society will comply with them, it will not. Only this time, unlike in spring, there is a completely different public mood: it was driven by the election results, that the severe restrictions ended and there will be freedom. We have freedom. ” Delphi S. Skvernelis said.

According to him, all politicians must clearly communicate to the public that today the common goal of all is to defeat the pandemic.

“The goal of all of us should be to do this, to respect the existing restrictions. If we introduce those that are impractical or redundant, they will provoke a different reaction in people,” added S. Skvernelis.

“We see certain challenges, because it will probably be difficult to determine if this is the real reason (for the movement – aut.p.), but we will really try to make sure that order is followed,” A. Bilotaitė told the meeting.

Speaking about long-distance traffic control, the minister also said that police officers will carry out intensive traffic controls on weekends and holidays.

“The resolution provides for the deadline from December 16. to 2021 January 3 Today, we spoke with the General Commissioner of Police and decided that there would be more intensification of controls on weekends and during the festive period. of constant intensive control, because it is mainly related to finances ”, said A. Bilotaitė.

It was also supported by Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė.

We have also spoken with the Commissioner. It certainly will not be that the movement is blocked from 1pm night and make sure someone on the road checks all passersby. There will be more physical control on holidays and weekends, and on ordinary days, especially during the working week, the means that the police know how to use as public and non-public will be used, ”said I. Šimonytė.

“We need to trust both the conscience of the people and the ability of officials to enforce those rules,” the prime minister added.
