Withstood a large load
Darius Steponkus, the director of the Klaipėda Republican Hospital, was pleased that during the stressful quarantine period, when large flows of patients were directed to his institution after the temporary closure of the Klaipėda University Hospital, no employees were infected. This has been accomplished through responsible work and compliance with all requirements of the Ministry of Health and epidemiologists to prevent the spread of COVID-19 infection.
By renewing the provision of personal health care services, hospitals face no less challenges: providing quality services and protecting employees and patients from coronavirus infection.
“As it was before the start of the quarantine, it is unlikely to be, but our doctors are ready to work, consulting patients not only remotely, but also directly, ensuring their safety,” said D. Steponkus.
Provision of scheduled services resumes in stages, in strict compliance with infection control requirements. Some services and consultations at the hospital have resumed earlier, some since earlier this week.
Several specialist doctors in the hospital departments will begin to advise patients from June 1.

Svaja Kundrotienė, head of the Klaipėda Republican Hospital Day Surgery Center, noted that the department had not stopped its activities until then, because the workload had to be taken from Klaipėda University Hospital, which was temporarily not accepting patients. Urgent ophthalmologist help was provided to all warm Klaipėda residents: approximately 30 patients were received per day.
Remote consultation has paid off
The services are now gradually updated. Initially, a remote consultation is carried out: the specialist doctor discusses the problem with the patient; if it cannot be resolved, the patient registers for direct consultation.
Clearly, remote consultations have paid off: The problem is solved and some patients no longer need to see a doctor. Patients are also satisfied with remote consultation: it saves time and protects the health of the individual and those around him.
It has been observed that patients’ attitudes towards counseling and their safety have changed during quarantine. Some of them fear possible infection and postpone visiting a specialist until later.
“It just came to our attention then. The patient can no longer come to change or verify the consultation time or cancel it, significantly advance the visit and wait his turn at the doctor’s door. Please come unaccompanied. There is a strict checkup. , the patient has to wear a mask, the temperature is measured, they are asked to bring their own pen to complete the documents. After all the mandatory procedures, the patient is safely accompanied to the doctor and then escorted, “explained S. Kundrotienė on the changes in the medical institution.
Communicates directly with patients.

Remember that patients must meet certain safety requirements. Patients are requested to arrive at the treatment center no earlier than 10 minutes before the start of the consultation with the designated doctor.
At the entrance of the institution, patients will be received by a specialist who will admit only registered patients for consultations at a specific time. The specialist will ask about signs of a respiratory infection, possible contact with a person infected with COVID-19, possible trips abroad during the last 14 days and related self-isolation, measure body temperature and ask to disinfect hands.
Patients with fever and symptoms of a viral infection will not be admitted to the outpatient center. These patients should consult a family doctor remotely.
Only one patient can wait in the office, it will be necessary to maintain a distance of 2 meters. The patient will be required to wear respiratory protection during the consultation. On average, 40-45 minutes are spent for a medical consultation. At the end of the consultation 10-15 min. will be assigned for ventilation and disinfection of the room.
