According to the Statistics Department on Friday, 764 people died from coronavirus in Lithuania. However, as reported by the BNS to the Registry Center, the electronic health system provided information on 917 deaths from this infectious disease.
“Health professionals in the e-health system have provided data on 917 people whose death certificate indicates the cause of death according to code U07.1 (COVID-19 disease, virus detected),” said Mindaugas Samkus, representative from the Records Center, in a comment posted Friday.
According to him, the National Center for Public Health (NVSC) does not currently take death statistics from the eHealth system.
“Statistics on deaths and their causes are provided today only to the Institute of Hygiene. We do not know where the NVSC obtains the data on deaths from COVID-19,” explained a representative from the Center of Records.
Hygiene Institute: Total number of deaths from COVID-19 may be higher
The Hygiene Institute has informed BNS that it publishes the causes of death after analyzing all the death certificates received during the relevant period. At present, the institution has officially provided information on deaths up to September.
“Next week we will present the October data,” said Rūta Ustinavičienė, head of the Department for Monitoring Death Cases and Their Causes at the Institute of Hygiene.
According to her, after analyzing all the death certificates, the total number of deaths may be even higher than the information entered by doctors in the electronic health system.
“If we see in the death certificate that the doctor did not register the covidity due to the root cause, but registered it due to intermediate causes, and we see that the person died of covidity according to the entire clinic, according to all the WHO rules, then we will code it as covid death ”, he commented. Representative of the Institute of Hygiene.
“Doctors really like to record ‘cardiac arrest’, but you will never see ‘cardiac arrest’ in our statistics, because when a person dies, they always have cardiac arrest.” We need a reason to stop our hearts, ”he added.
For its part, the NVSC states that, in accordance with current procedures, it receives information on deaths from medical institutions, which are delivered with a form.
“Following information on the excess deaths that may have been related to COVID-19, the NVSC wrote to the Registry Center requesting information on all COVID-19 deaths recorded in the Collaborative Infrastructure Information System and Electronic Health Services , providing detailed information. “, – BSC commented Justina Petravičienė, representative of NVSC.
Lithuania statistics: eHealth data on COVID-19 deaths unreliable
Data on COVID-19 deaths obtained from the online health information system cannot be considered reliable, Lithuania Statistics announced on Friday.
However, when it turns out that the statistics it provides are 153 fewer deaths than eHealth, the department promises to recalculate it.
“The data on the causes of death collected in the electronic health system cannot be evaluated as reliable; for this reason, they are transmitted to the Institute of Hygiene, which organizes said data and publishes information on the causes of death,” read in the Lithuanian Statistics report.
Therefore, the Department publishes data on deaths from COVID-19 collected by the National Center for Public Health (NVSC) in accordance with established procedures, which are provided to physicians by completing Form U07.1.
The Statistics Department also reported that it had asked the Registry Center for the reasons for the deaths.
“Having all the data and evaluating the quality and reliability together with the Institute of Hygiene and the National Center for Public Health,[Estadísticas de Lituania]will publish the recalculated death rates for COVID-19, “the comment reads.
The BNS Registry Center acknowledged receipt of this request.
