More commonly known as bunkers in society, such buildings were constructed during the Soviet era to protect the population in the event of use of nuclear, bacteriological, chemical, or other weapons of mass destruction. The underground buildings were isolated to the maximum from the outside world, they stored food, medicine, protective equipment, various chemical and radiation intelligence equipment and even leisure equipment, so that the psyche was not damaged any longer.
After the collapse of the USSR, many Vilnius bunkers were transformed into nightclubs, gyms, bowling alleys, or simply empty warehouses, and their equipment often became scrap metal. Fortunately, our days have come to an extremely authentic hideout that belonged to the New Town Mohikan industry, which filed for bankruptcy a few years ago. When the owners of the territory changed and converted it into a complex of lofts and offices, VšĮ Gatvės gyvos made a decisive decision to preserve this hideout as an original exhibition of the past era for us and future generations.
After negotiations with loft developers in 2019, “Gatvės gyvos” bought the old hideout with his own funds and began to make great efforts to resurrect it. “There were times when there was only despair and we asked ourselves, what kind of problems do we buy here? We struggled with all the destructive moisture, the items grew layers of mold, we were unable to repair what appeared to be butter, – said Albertas Kazlauskas, a representative and guide of the Gatvės gyvos. – However, we have taken small steps to the point of having something to be proud of. The hideout has retained the full original look of the 1970s, and at the same time is ready to receive curious visitors. “
Albert’s colleague Pavel Puzyna, who has explored many of Vilnius’ dungeons, emphasizes: “Our goal is unique, as it is currently the only authentic civil defense hideout in Vilnius that is accessible to the public. The number of these places is decreasing over time, so our desire to preserve the heritage of the Cold War is becoming increasingly important. “
“Gatvės gyvos” invites you to visit this Naujamiestis dungeon since May 29. Due to the restrictions applied during the quarantine period, the company team decided to offer a special program: a luxury visit with an audio guide. Why luxury? Because visitors will have the opportunity to explore the object in a very private way: by purchasing a ticket for the tour, participants will reserve 1.5 hours. the time during which there will be no more unauthorized people in the hideout, only the person or group of people who purchased the ticket at that time. Therefore, each visitor will receive the maximum dose of sensations: he will open, light and listen to everything by himself, and he will give each exhibition all the time he wants without any tension.
Public guided tours will also be organized as the epidemiological situation improves. However, those who already have their own equipment and want private excursions: if certain security aspects are agreed, it is entirely possible.
