With difficult words, the head of the Kaunas Intensive Care Clinic prof. Vidas Pilvinis said the young man had been suffering from a coronavirus infection for some time.
“It is difficult to speak today because I have to admit the fact that yesterday in our hospital, a 27-year-old boy with Covid-19 pneumonitis, with severe respiratory failure, died after prolonged treatment,” said the doctor.
According to the doctor, the patient became ill last month, on November 1, the infection showed typical signs of influenza, the patient did not have any concomitant illness, did not seek medical attention, was exercising.
In case of fever, weakness, seek medical attention immediately.
“The patient was examined for two weeks. By the way, I want to point out, the first PCR tests were negative during the acute period. However, the symptoms became more pronounced and the respiratory failure progressed. However, based on the clinical course of the disease, our doctors suspected that the patient was still on Covid-19, because the family members were also sick, ”said the doctor.
After two weeks, the patient was admitted to a medical institution, where, even after repeated laboratory tests, only the clinical course of the disease allowed to suspect the disease.
“But with severe respiratory failure progressing and realizing that tertiary level care was also needed, our resuscitation vehicle went to Marijampolmp. The patient underwent artificial lung ventilation during transport. He came to our hospital, but we saw that these traditional methods and medical assistance were ineffective, so we immediately decided on another method of assistance: extracorporeal membrane oxygen therapy, which was applied immediately, “said V. Pilvinis.
For some time, the vital functions of the young man have been ensured by the use of artificial lung ventilation and an additional device that provides oxygen to the patient’s blood.
However, respiratory failure continued to progress, infiltrative lesions in the lungs persisted, and infectious complications later contributed.
“All the time, the patient was monitored and treated until yesterday,” said the doctor from the Kaunas clinics.
Insidious infection
The doctor stressed that the COVID-19 infection was very insidious.
“Your clinical signs at first may be like signs of an influenza infection. This has been the case with our patient for some time.
For some patients, it manifests as mild symptoms, but regardless of the age of the patient, it can be threatening and fatal, even for young and middle-aged patients ”, emphasized V. Pilvinis.
According to him, the average age of patients treated in hospital resuscitation is 54 to 64 years.
“I know there may be older patients in other treatment facilities, but this particular case was our youngest patient with such pronounced symptoms and such acutely progressive respiratory failure,” the doctor added.
Information was received at 7 pm
According to Justina Petravičienė, representative of the National Center for Public Health (NVSC), who explained to the portal, the man was first admitted to the Marijampolė Hospital, from where he was later taken to Kaunas.
“The guard at the Kaunas clinics passed this information on to our specialists in the morning, around 7 o’clock. “This person’s death will be included in the statistics on Friday,” he said.
According to the specialist, according to preliminary data, the deceased had no comorbidities. This person’s coronavirus infection is associated with a family outbreak.
“It just came to our knowledge then. And they had quite complicated forms, they also needed hospital treatment”, – commented J. Petravičienė.
