“The figures are not going well across Europe and remain the same: worrying. We are all waiting for the vaccine, ideally in the second half of December the European Medicines Agency should approve Pfizer, the BioNTech vaccine, as safe to use. And in January a decision will be made on the Moderna vaccine. There are at least two vaccines that could be introduced very quickly. It is necessary that all member states are now prepared for the logistics, how the vaccines will be transported and stored and how people will be vaccinated ” A. Skaisgirytė told LRT radio.

According to her, the first vaccines should arrive in Lithuania in the second half of December.

“It is approximately the second half of December, when the European Medicines Agency will authorize the use. From the moment the vaccine is authorized, it can be transported and the processes started. We should be ready for practical implementation by the new year, ”says A. Skaisgirytė.

According to her, G. Nausėda hopes that the start of vaccination in Lithuania will not be delayed, because every day it costs people’s lives.

“Our Ministry of Health has plans, but of course the implementation of those plans is very important to the President. Here, the President has a clear expectation that until the last minute, the interim government must implement the plans and smoothly deliver the work to the new ones. The start of vaccination should not be delayed any additional day. As soon as the responsible EU institutions confirm that they are safe and reliable, vaccination must start in Lithuania. “It has to be done immediately, because every day extra costs people’s lives, “he said.

On Thursday and Friday, President Gitanas Nausėda will attend the European Council in Brussels. European leaders will discuss measures to control the coronavirus, a vaccine distribution strategy, climate change targets for 2030, the fight against extremism and terrorism, and relations with the United States and the EU’s neighbors.

EU leaders will also assess progress in the Brexit negotiations and ongoing discussions on the final adoption of the EU’s multiannual financial perspectives.
