According to the politician who left the Seimas, the rulers showed their arrogance, both by not agreeing to cede the position of chairman of the Seimas Audit Committee to the “peasants” and by rushing to hand over the new government led by Ingrida Šimonytė as soon as possible. This, the politician points out, will act as a unifying and unifying factor for the minority of the Seimas.
“Valstietis” considers the arguments of the rulers that the quicker transfer of the commanders of power to the new majority of the Seimas is required for objective reasons: the situation of COVID-19 is out of control and the victims of the coronavirus are counted by dozens every day. R. Karbauskis does not believe that the government of I. Šimonytė will better deal with the threats posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, therefore, he assures politicians, without ill will, but to improve Lithuania, he suggests that the outgoing government can advise successor politicians.
The rulers did not normalize the relationship, thus shortening its existence
R. Karbauskis, summarizing the days after his resignation from the Seimas, says that he understood that the majority of the parliament had opted for a confrontation with the “peasants.”
“They don’t want to normalize the relationship, I think it’s a mistake. It is a big mistake to know the balance of your votes in the Seimas. They themselves choose the path of confrontation. We have not taken a single step to confront each other after the elections. They did it all themselves, and it is very surprising to me, ”said the president of the Lithuanian Green and Peasant Union (LVŽS).
According to R. Karbauskis, the tactics chosen by the rulers in relations with the opposition simply shorten the existence of the majority.
“Shorten its existence. We were really ready to be a constructive opposition, we were ready to work without confrontation, in a completely different way than they did. But they chose another option, “he said.
According to the “peasant”, in general, when it comes to friction between the rulers and the opposition, it should be noted that the reason for all this is the principles and the unsatisfied demand for respect. It was also a matter of principle that the “peasants” obtained the chairmanship of the Audit Committee, says R. Karbauskis.
“It is not about charges, it is a matter of principle, that is, the search for respect for the political culture, the traditions of the Seimas,” explained Karbauskis, noting that the “peasants” who did not receive this position did not lose anything tangible. and that the analogue of the Audit Committee will be formed in the near future. in the shadow government.
“If they hope to have won something without giving us the chairmanship of the Audit Committee, then I will say that they have not won anything,” said the politician.
R. Karbauskis affirmed that in the communication and attitude of the rulers he counted the signals sent to the “peasants” that he did not want a constructive opposition.
Recalling that the rulers agreed to nominate Jonas Jarutis, candidate of the Lithuanian Green Union of Peasants, to the Seimas Board, R. Karbauskis reiterated that this was not a sufficient gesture to start a constructive work.
According to the politician, it was not the goodwill of the rulers, but the impasse to which he himself led the majority of the Seimas, announcing his withdrawal from the Seimas, that forced him to take into account this demand of the LVŽS.
“It just came to our attention then. If I hadn’t left, they wouldn’t have,” said R. Karbauskis, remembering his political “victim”.
There was talk of political repercussions: the opposition will be mobilized by the rulers themselves
The leader of the “peasants” reasoned that, as in the natural world, in politics, every action has an impact. Therefore, he said, the arrogance shown by the rulers and the refusal to listen to what the largest opposition party says will turn against themselves.
On the one hand, said R. Karbauskis, the opposition is already reluctant to listen to the calls of the rulers so that the process of transfer of power to the new government is completed as soon as possible, on the other hand, he emphasized that such haste and the relationship formed with the minority Seimas they will unite the opposition in the near future.
R. Karbauskis said that during his visit to the Seimas on Tuesday and speaking with members of the “peasant” faction, he shared his ideas.
“It is not the opposition that will unite, but the opposition (the rulers – ELTA) will unite,” R. Karbauskis told the LVŽS faction on Tuesday.
“The fact that they want to present the government’s program during the day and then vote immediately, the fact that they want the government’s approval all of a sudden … After all, all these things unite the opposition,” emphasized R. Karbauskis.
He predicted that the minority forces of the Seimas would be increasingly dissatisfied with the actions of the rulers, eventually allowing them to focus on the spring after feeling communion.
“I think we will have a very united opposition in the spring,” he said.
There was no concern from the ruling language that there was an urgent need for a pandemic threat
According to the politician, despite the majority calls from the Seimas to take into account the pandemic and accelerate the process of transferring powers to the new government, the state does not care if the right wing takes control of the government before or a few days later.
Speaking at Seimas on Tuesday, Seimas President Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen called on opposition forces to listen to the proposals and complete all procedures to hand over powers to the new government this week.
“I hope that the opposition factions also understand and realize that a person dies in an hour. This is not the time to postpone the meetings for another week or another,” said V. Čmilytė-Nielsen.
After the Seimas did not agree on whether the government program should be approved on Thursday of this week or Tuesday of the next, the deputies voted in favor of doing it on Friday.
“Dear ones, if we do not form a government that will start working another weekend, we will look ridiculous, we will look dangerous,” conservative leader Gabrielius Landsbergis addressed the members of the Seimas before this vote.
However, R. Karbauskis says that such calls are not justified for at least several reasons. Firstly, according to him, there is no reason to believe that in the rush to transfer powers to the new Government, it will make more appropriate decisions and, secondly, any decision will in any case face the reluctance of Lithuanian citizens to follow. the measures or recommendations introduced.
“The argument that a person dies every day … if I saw a program, a proposal, what are they going to change in the management of COVID, then it could be said that there is something. But if it’s hidden, maybe they have something else to hide. After all, no one has heard what they will do differently. So use the argument here to change the government sooner because COVID will change … I’ll just say it. There are no tools that work better than those currently used in Lithuania. With the exception of a curfew, “said R. Karbauskis, immediately noting that this decision does not make sense either.
“I would not take any action in Lithuania. We are not a nation that would be inclined to follow the rules very strictly,” he said, assuring him that the level of control of the pandemic will remain the same as a result of the change of government.
“Nothing will change in terms of COVID governance when there is a change of government. Nothing will change,” explained R. Karbauskis, adding that only qualitative and, understood, politically uncontrolled changes in society can yield results.
He offered consultations to the outgoing ministers of the new government
Finally, R. Karbauskis pointed out another reason why the rulers should not rush to approve the government program of I. Šimonytė. According to the former member of Seimas, he is well aware that in any case a new government will emerge and that neither the “peasants” nor the opposition in general will hinder it.
However, says the leader of the “peasants”, if the new government has taken over a significant part of the objectives of the outgoing government program, it would be logical to first consult with the politicians who developed the program: Saul Skvernelis and his cabinet . Only outgoing ministers, says the “peasant”, can explain to members of I. Šimonytė’s cabinet what they do not understand.
“We are not anyone’s enemy; we will help them as much as we can if they continue our work according to the schedule. We will not seek humiliation, but we will try to speak if they do not understand something or want a more extensive explanation. Kukuraitis, for example, will surely be able to explain social problems. Another is some other matter “, reasoned R. Karbauskis.
“There is no ill will or bad intentions on our part, we just want something better in Lithuania,” said the president of LVŽS, summing up the conversation.
