New international research results: Lithuanian fourth and eighth grade students in the top ten countries

“In TIMSS international research, the achievements of Lithuanian fourth and eighth grade students in mathematics and natural sciences continue to improve and are significantly higher than international averages. Compared to the research results of 2015, the results of Lithuanian students in fourth grade in natural sciences and in eighth grade in natural science and mathematics have improved significantly. In Lithuania, the number of fourth and eighth grade students who have reached the highest international level of achievement has increased in all fields, ”says Algirdas Monkevičius, Acting Minister of Education, Science and Sports.

In 2019, a four-year international research on math and science skills was carried out and involved 72 countries and regions.

Compared with the 2015 research results, the results of Lithuanian students in fourth grade in natural sciences and in eighth grade in natural science and mathematics have improved enormously, says A. Monkevičius.

Lithuanian fourth graders are significantly ahead of their peers from 6-8 countries

Lithuanian fourth grade students’ math score is 542 points on the scale. Lithuania occupies 12 positions of the participants from 58 countries, statistically significantly the fourth quarter of Lithuania is surpassed by the pairs of 8 countries.

Students from Singapore (625 points), Hong Kong (602 points), South Korea (600 points) and Taiwan (China, 599 points) were the most successful, while students from the Philippines (297 points) and Pakistan (328 points) were the least successful.

The result of Lithuanian students in the fourth grade in natural sciences is 538 points on the scale. Lithuania occupies 10 positions out of 58 participants, statistically significantly fourth grade students from our country are surpassed only by students from 6 countries.

The results of students from Latvia, Norway (5th grade), the United States, Sweden, England, the Czech Republic, Australia and Hong Kong are similar to the achievements of Lithuanian fourth grade students in natural sciences.

Students from Singapore (595 points) and South Korea (588 points) were the most successful, while students from the Philippines (249 points) and Pakistan (290 points) were the least successful.

Results of Lithuanian 8th graders: Lithuania is beaten only by 5-6 countries

Eighth grade Lithuanian students’ math score: 520 points on the scale. Lithuania ranks 8th out of 39 participants, but only eight students from 6 countries are statistically significantly ahead of our 8th grade students.

Students from Singapore (616 points), Taiwan (China) (612 points), and South Korea (607 points) were the most successful, while students from Morocco (388 points), PAR (389 points) and Saudi Arabia ( 394 points) were the least successful.

Lithuanian eighth grade students’ science score: 534 points on the scale. Lithuania ranks 7th out of 39 participants, statistically significantly ahead of 5 countries.

Eighth grade Lithuanian natural science students in 2019. The result increased by 15 points compared to 2015. The results of Russian, Hungarian and Australian students are similar to the results of Lithuanian eighth grade students in natural science.

Students from Singapore (608 points), Taiwan (China) (574 points), and Japan (570 points) were the most successful, while students from PAR (370 points) and Lebanon (377 points) were the least successful.

The best results occur in elementary schools and progymnasiums

The best results in math and science were obtained in fourth grade by students studying in elementary schools, and in eighth grade, by students in progymnasiums and gymnasiums. The results of fourth graders studying in gymnasiums do not reach the average of Lithuanian results in all fields. The results of fourth and eighth grade students studying in basic schools are also below the Lithuanian average in all areas and are 16–45 points lower.
