“It would be much better and more beneficial for the Lithuanian people if the decisions were made this week, when the interim government takes office,” the prime minister-designate told LRT radio on Monday morning.
He also spoke about it during a council of health experts convened by the president on Sunday, he said.
Surely the current government could make decisions, and the future government, me personally, perhaps the President of Lithuania would simply support those decisions. “For the public to understand better that this is something that is necessary and that the government makes those decisions not because it wants to show malice, but because the situation is out of control and there is a very high risk for our health system,” he said.
I. Šimonytė made no secret of his regret that outgoing Prime Minister S. Skvernelis and Health Minister Aurelijus Veryga did not have time on Sunday to participate in the meeting of the Health Expert Council organized by the President to discuss how to manage the spread of the pandemic.
“I am very sorry that both the acting prime minister and the acting health minister did not join the meeting, they sent their advisers.” They presented a bit about what the flow of thoughts is like and what to do. But such certainty that the new Government will not be the first to meet and make decisions on the tightening of the quarantine, that certainty has not emerged, ”said I. Šimonytė, emphasizing that there is less and less time to make important decisions.
“It just came to my knowledge then. If decisions need to be made, they will be made. I am very scared by the time we may lose. As the situation continues to deteriorate, the pressure on the healthcare system increases not by days, but by hours ”Added I. Šimonytė.
Finally, the Prime Minister-designate emphasized that he had recently felt less willing to cooperate in the return of power.
“Probably at the beginning, immediately after the elections, there was more good will and an attempt to discuss, because Minister Veryga also participated in the presidential expert council and there was an exchange of views. Lately, it seems to me that this is a little less, ”I. Šimonytė told LRT radio.
On Sunday, President Gitanas Nausėda discussed with members of the Council of Health Experts how to control the spread of the pandemic and the possibilities of tightening the quarantine. The meeting was followed by conclusions proposing to restrict the movement of the population as much as possible.
The meeting with the members of the Council of Health Experts was also attended by Prime Minister-designate I. Šimonytė and the candidate for Minister of Health of the Government under his leadership Arūnas Dulkys.
Although, as the Presidency assured, both S. Skvernelis and A. Veryga received invitations, other people took their place on Sunday.
On Sunday, Councilor Jonas Kairys took over for S. Skvernelis, and Kristina Garuolienė, Vice Minister of Health, replaced A. Veryga.
