The WHO has warned of a possible misleading claim that the belief that the population will soon be vaccinated, so the crisis is over, is wrong.
“The vaccine is not equivalent to the elimination of COVID-19,” said Michael Ryan, WHO emergency director, during a virtual press conference.
“Vaccines alone will not accomplish this task,” he said, emphasizing that vaccines will not be available to everyone in the first months of next year.
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said earlier that progress on vaccines was “picking up and now we’re starting to see a little light at the end of the tunnel.”
However, the WHO is concerned by the growing belief that the pandemic is almost over. “The truth is that in many countries, the virus currently spreads very fast, hospitals, intensive care units are overcrowded and doctors are overworked,” said the WHO chief.
On Friday, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the world exceeded 65 million.
“The pandemic will last for a long time, and the decisions that the leaders and citizens of the countries make in the coming days will determine the course of the outbreak in the short term and when the pandemic will end,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
