Latvia extended the state of emergency until January 11

The Latvian government extended the state of emergency in the country due to the coronavirus pandemic on Tuesday, January 11, Prime Minister Krišjanis Karinis said.

From now on, the use of masks will be mandatory in all closed spaces except at home, that is, people will have to be with them and in the workplace.

Private events are prohibited in the country and only people from one household can get together. The exception is for people who live alone: ​​they are allowed to meet people from another household.

On weekends and holidays, only basic product stores will be open: grocery stores, gas stations, pharmacies.

The trade of alcoholic beverages and tobacco products will be prohibited on weekends and holidays.

The State Chancellery has clarified the information on business days for shops and supermarkets. The previously announced notice that their work hours will be limited to 6 to 20 hours has been clarified; There will be no such restriction, but an area of ​​15 square meters must be provided for a buyer.

All stores and supermarkets, regardless of their area, will be able to work on weekdays from 6 to 20 hours, but they must provide an area of ​​15 square meters per customer.

Border controls will be tightened to ensure that all persons entering Latvia fill out electronic questionnaires and comply with the self-isolation requirements. This control will be carried out by the State Border Guard Service in cooperation with the army and the police.

As of December 7, public transport may occupy up to 50 percent. passenger seats. From that date, masks in public transport will also be mandatory for children from 7 to 13 years old.

The government has also decided that the education of students from 1st to 4th grade will continue to be organized in the usual way of contact and that 5th and 6th grades will move to distance education.
