A high-traffic car in a pedestrian zone on a shopping street blew up Tuesday. In addition to the five dead, there are 14 more injured.
Prosecutor Peter Fritzen said the driver of the car, a 51-year-old Trier resident, likely had “psychiatric problems” and was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
After questioning the suspect, the police stated that they did not see “any indication of political motive”. Fritzen said the prosecutor’s office was considering requesting psychiatric care for the suspect.
At the same press conference, the mayor of Trier, Wolfram Leibe, said that among the dead were a nine-month-old boy and a 73-year-old woman.
“I think it is the darkest day in Trier since WWII,” he said.
A 25-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man also died. Police have not yet released the details of the fifth victim.
Malu Dreyer, the prime minister of Rhineland-Palatinate, where Trier is located, said she was shocked by the death of the baby due to the alleged “crazy action” and expressed her condolences to all affected families.
The mother of the deceased baby was injured and is being treated at the hospital.
Witnesses previously said that when the car struck people, they flew through the air.

Speaking to reporters, Mayor W. Leibe spoke with tears in his eyes about the shock he experienced on the street when he saw a children’s shoe next to the body of a girl.
“It was a horrible sight,” he said. “He hurt a lot of people.”
The incident started around 12 pm 50 min. Greenwich Mean Time (2:50 pm Lithuanian) and ended four minutes after the first calls to rescue services. When the suspect escaped from the city’s main shopping street, the police arrested him.
According to the police, the suspect flew through the streets for about 600 m or a kilometer. Officials surrounded the scene of the incident and questioned people from all over the city center.
A witness filmed the arrest of the driver on a smartphone. The footage shows a suspect handcuffed and lying face down on the ground next to a damaged car, who was harassed by several officers.

Joachim, who attended worship services with his teenage daughters Helena and Sophia, said he was sad.
“We wanted to show compassion for those who lost their lives and those who lost loved ones,” he said.
The man, who introduced himself to the suspect’s former neighbor, told NTV that the suspect had mental health and financial problems, as well as disagreeing with his father.
