SAM: number of hospital beds varies when converting to COVID-19
When institutions report coronavirus statistics on a daily basis, the total number of hospital beds varies from day to day. The Ministry of Health (SAM) says that only beds that are used are reported, and the differences also stem from the redesign of facilities to treat COVID-19 patients.
The statistics of 61 Lithuanian medical institutions providing hospital treatment services are published in the statistics released by the Statistics Department this week and are previously reported to SAM on a daily basis. However, not all institutions provide this data on a daily basis, so the number of beds varies depending on the number of treatment facilities provided on a given day.
For example, on October 25, according to data provided by 59 out of 61 institutions, there were 17,120 beds in Lithuania, but on October 27, after receiving data from the same number of institutions, there were already 17,367 beds.
On October 28, after receiving data from all the institutions, the total number of beds was 17,588.
However, on November 3, when data from all treatment facilities were also released, the number of beds was slightly less than 17,483. On November 20, also after receiving data from all treatment facilities, the number of beds was already 16,805. it was even slightly lower than 16,686, again reaching 16,801 on November 24.
According to SAM, the number of beds may decrease when a COVID-19 patient enters isolation rooms.
“If other patients are not accommodated in the same room, other patients will not be included in the total number of beds,” the ministry told BNS.
In addition, beds, according to SAM, are being reduced by converting simple rooms into those intended for the treatment of patients with COVID-19.
“The reorganization of simple rooms into COVID-19 patient rooms leaves ‘active’ beds with oxygen, and others are not counted because no one will be placed in them,” SAM said in a response.
