Citing sources in the defense industry, TASS reported that the project is overseen by the state corporation Objedinionnaja aviastroitelnaja korporacija (OAK).

The report says the project is being transported and that work has already started in the Tupolev PAK DA bomber cabin.

“The final assembly of the entire machine should be completed by 2021,” said a source.

Stealth bombers must avoid tracking and carrying a large number of weapons.

Russian authorities released almost no details about the project, but last year Deputy Defense Minister Alexei Krivorochka said that the aircraft maker Tupolev, which is part of the OAK, was responsible.

OAK spokesman Sergei Loktionov, who was contacted by the AFP news agency, declined to comment on the TASS report. Tupolev has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Reports indicated that the plane’s wing design would be similar to the US’s discrete radar bombers. That would fly at subsonic speeds and be armed with strategic cruise missiles and hypersonous weapons.

China is developing its Xian H-20, a long-range radar bomber. The South China Morning Post reported this month that the plane could be shown to the public for the first time at an aviation show in November.
