In the 24th edition of the Lithuanian Car of the Year awards, 7 cars were nominated for this honorary title, selected after 10 months of tests and inspections by members of the electoral commission. The following 7 models (in alphabetical order) applied for the title of “Car of the Year”:

  1. „CUPRA Formentor“
  2. “Peugeot 2008”
  3. “Porsche Taycan”
  4. Renault Captur
  5. Škoda Octavia
  6. “Toyota Yaris”
  7. “Volkswagen ID.3”

Each member of the commission was asked to award 25 points to these seven models on the last night of the election. Summing up the scores, it became clear that not one, but even two cars claim to become the car of the year in Lithuania in 2021.

Valdas Valiukevičius, president of the Lithuanian Journalists Automobile Club, which organizes the elections and a member of the electoral commission, noted that such a case has occurred only once. And in that case, a rule applies: victory is given to the model to which the commission has given the most first places in its votes.

However, here too he expected a flicker of anticipation. After counting the top spots, it became clear that the two cars that claimed the honorary title were also put together in the same way. Second places had to be counted, and after these calculations it was clear that Peugeot was only one point behind. Thus, for the first time in the election history, the Volkswagen ID.3 was announced as the 2021 Lithuanian Car of the Year.

And the SUV of the year; and “Electric Car of the Year”

Another award, often called the second most important in the elections, was awarded Friday night: “Car of the nation.” It was voted for almost a month by the readers of the portal for 15min. Volkswagen Tiguan became the nation’s car in 2021.

During the live broadcast, other awards were given to the best models on the market this year. The best model in the endangered segment, the real SUVs, was named Friday night. Land Rover Defender has become the SUV of the year,

The “Urban SUV of the Year” was also chosen, a model in the segment that is filling up quickly. The award went to Peugeot 2008.

For the first time in the history of the elections, the “Electric Car of the Year” was also chosen. It was chosen from the largest number of electric cars ever presented in the elections: up to ten models. Seeing such a large number of entrants, SoliTek decided to set up a nomination. Volkswagen ID.3 has become the “Electric Car of the Year”.

Athlete of the year

Every year, the Lithuanian Journalists Automobile Club, which organizes the Lithuanian Automobile of the Year elections, also names the athletes who have made Lithuania’s name more famous.

On Friday night, the title “Steering Wheel of the Year” went to none other than the racist Benediktas Vanags, who is furiously preparing for the Dakar Rally.
