Veryga argued that the curfew should not limit the nightly movement of people, but rather weekend trips to major supermarkets.
“I don’t know, apparently, that curfew imagines what it means in its own way. If it really is a stop to the nightlife, it does not happen, it is already stopped. The curfew may necessitate a weekend when you can no longer go to the movies, it meets in the shopping malls. We remember our nightclub disputes when they said it would all be resolved. Now we have a similar case with large supermarkets, ”said A. Veryga.
The minister explained that even stricter restrictions would simply not be effective now because people are tired and follow instructions just to avoid being fined.
“We see other countries where society is perhaps more active, we see protests, elements of riots, very aggressive demonstrations. It is very funny that they do not reach such forms in Lithuania. It is very important to feel the pulse of society. Society is tired, if we follow what is accepted with sincerity, we would have a different effect. The public really reacts differently to the situation, ”said the minister.
He said “nothing bad would happen if the big supermarkets didn’t work on weekends.”
Veryga added that grocery stores could continue to operate.
According to the minister, there is growth throughout Lithuania.
“From everywhere, it is safe to say that from everywhere. What else did the quarantine bring when it became very clear that those who could telecommute did so? It is that they have returned to their families, infected loved ones, there really are those foci. Anyway, there are cases everywhere, in treatment, nursing, educational institutions. Basically, everywhere people meet and communicate, ”said A. Veryga.
The acting health minister said he did not comment that the outgoing government was no longer making unpopular decisions pending a change of government.
“I cannot say for others, I can only say for myself. I don’t have that attitude, I think we should do a good job for the last day. I would like to believe that other colleagues react in a very similar way ”, explained the Acting Minister of Health.
Results only next week
The government decided on Wednesday to extend the quarantine until December 18. According to A. Veryga, it will only be clear next week if the first three weeks of quarantine have worked as expected.
“We cannot say that we really failed, we have growth, but not exponential. “We are anxiously awaiting the numbers every day, we have seen the success of other countries that have previously applied the quarantine, other countries took 3 weeks to see that growth curve, we still have a week to see the result,” said Minister Veryga . .
The politician has admitted that he is already counting the last days before the end of his ministerial mandate.
“I honestly say that I really do count. We really want a fluid change to take place, because this situation requires clarity for everyone, the team, the people. (…) Optimistically, if everything goes well, there will most likely be a change on December 8-10. This is a couple more weeks, “Acting Health Minister A. Veryga said on news radio.
