This week, the municipal council approved the decision to establish a joint institution with the university: the progymnasium of the Mykolas Romeris University.
As Albertas Lakštauskas, educational adviser to the mayor of Vilnius, told BNS, the agreement is scheduled to be signed in the coming weeks, and the school and kindergarten should start operating in September 2022.
“The interest of the municipality is Antakalnis, a place where the need grows, children of progymnasium age do not fit in Antakalnis progymnasium itself, children come. There was also the possibility that they offered a building that they did not need. And their interest is to have such a school as an opportunity to combine science with general education, ”A. Lakštauskas told BNS.
It is planned to establish a progymnasium for students from 1st to 8th grade in Valakupių str. The complex, which used to house the University’s Faculty of Politics and Management, also housed the Belarusian European University of Humanities and is now unused.
According to A. Lakštauskas, the school will not have an exclusive direction of education, but will focus on the quality of education.
At that time, the school regulations established that the uniqueness of the institution would be education based on the combination of science and practice through the implementation of the STEAM methodology (combining exact, natural sciences, technologies, arts). Promising circles of law, management, young economist and mentor, as well as forensics and psychology, a rich selection of additional foreign languages, including Korean and Japanese.
“There is a building right there and we plan to have our own kindergarten,” he said.
The agreement stipulates that MRU and the municipality will contribute a symbolic euro when establishing a public institution, but undertakes to allocate at least 6 million euros for the repair and adaptation of the premises to the school. euros. A. Lakštauskas says that the total investments of MRU and the municipality are expected to reach about 7 million. euros.
“We plan to have the concept of the school first, the architectural task that we want the school to have, then turn on the builders. The buildings are not demolished, they are suitable for renovation after assessing the condition. The preliminary figure, based on standard schemes, is 7 million euros, ”he said.
The deal has yet to be approved by MRU’s board and is expected to be signed in the coming weeks. Among other things, the establishment of the school will require the approval of the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports – the right to use the facilities for 10 years to transfer the facilities to a new institution.
