What to expect in big cities?
Christmas awaits something different this year: big cities will not organize solemn Christmas tree lighting concerts, many activities and entertainment will be broadcast and organized online or on television. The objective is to reduce the flow of people and control that the great holidays of the year do not cause outbreaks of Covid-19.
But to keep the Christmas spirit alive, there will be more lights and decorations.
Kaunas Christmas tree lighting only on TV screen
The Kaunas Municipality states that, taking into account the epidemiological situation in Lithuania, the lighting of the Christmas tree will only be broadcast on television.
“In assessing the current Covid-19 situation, we are only planning a television event: a Christmas tree lighting festival. When the situation changes, we have ideas and plans to organize other Christmas events and activities.
The television broadcast will be created from several fragments: a concert of the most famous artists in Žalgiris Arena (there will be no spectators), the mayor’s greeting and the festive Town Hall square, ”said Urtė Povilaitytė, Project Manager of the Department of Public Relations of the Municipality of Kaunas.
The usual celebration of the Christmas tree will not take place in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
“There will be no Christmas tree lighting in the Town Hall Square. We invite everyone to stay home and watch the festive event and the Christmas tree lighting on television screens. This year, the Christmas tree lighting festival it will be moved from the Town Hall Square only to television screens so that Kaunas residents and people from all over Lithuania can watch the festival safely while staying at home, ”added U. Povilaitytė.
If the Christmas tree celebration is missed, the Kaunas municipality will try to create a Christmas spirit throughout the city.
“Exclusive decorations will be placed on the city’s bridges, public lighting poles, in the spaces of the old town, Santaka Park, etc. This year, the revived Laisvės Alley will welcome the brightest Kaunas residents, new garlands of light bulbs will shine on the growing linden trees here.
We plan to decorate the entire city by November 28th. The festive decorations will be revealed in their entirety at sunset, starting this week they will gradually glow in the spaces of the city. Although this year’s holidays will be different than usual, they will definitely not be less bright and welcoming, ”said the project manager.
The North Star will shine in Klaipeda
The installation “Northern Star” will be illuminated in Klaipeda during the Christmas period.
“Let’s raise our eyes to the sky and see the Klaipėda-based” North Star “, which has shown the way to sailors, astronomers and travelers from all over the planet for more than a century.
As it rises and shines brighter each day, it will become a true Christmas star with its unique glow that will invite everyone to the ceremony table for the biggest celebration of the year ”, says Rūta Steponavičienė, project manager at Klaipėdos šventės , who promised that not all Christmas surprises are here.
The lighting of a Christmas tree in Klaipeda, as well as in Kaunas, can only be observed from home.
“Under the current rules, we were forced to abandon both the traditional fir lighting and the cozy pre-Christmas gatherings at the Theater Square and the Christmas fair.
In the current situation, we will have to invest more not in cultural content, but in ensuring the safety or technical implementation of ideas, ”says Romandas Žiubrys, director of Klaipėdos Šventės.
Organizers of the festive events assure that the city will not lack the humor and festive joy of this time of year, and the adventure collectors will be invited to an intriguing journey of Christmas and New Years events.
Vilnius Christmas Fair goes online
This year, the Christmas villages will move from the squares and streets of Vilnius to the electronic space during the winter holidays.
“This year is already the year in which we must look for alternatives to the usual activities that make the city happy.
We are bringing Christmas towns online for security reasons, although the excitement will not be the same, it will at least partially offset the restrictions created by the pandemic and allow Vilnius residents to enjoy interesting Christmas gifts, ”said the Mayor of Vilnius, Remigijus Šimašius.
This year we also had to give up the 3D Christmas fairy tales, the Christmas train, the Christmas campuses, the International Christmas Charity Fair, the Christmas Design Plaza.
In the current circumstances, it would be irresponsible to continue tempting events when it is not possible to ensure compliance with distances or other requirements. We must be determined, because the health and safety of people is our top priority, ”said Edita Tamošiūnaitė, Vilnius Deputy Mayor.
Great attention will be paid to the decoration of the city, light decorations.
“Not only will the old town and the center shine, where the spruces of the cathedral and the town hall, the trees of Lukiškės square, the crowns of Odminiai square, the central part of the Šventaragis valley, the access to the Vingis park will be decorated. from Čiurlionio street, but also the distant areas closest to home.
There will be more luminous decorations in the districts, illuminated community spruces, rooms, houses and shop windows will compete with each other, where it will be fun to walk and admire with the closest people, following all the recommendations and safe distances, ”said the Vilnius city municipality in a press release.
Kaunas and the main Lithuanian fir on Cathedral Square will be illuminated on November 28 this year. December 5 Klaipėda and the second Vilnius fir on the Town Hall Square will shine.
