China has been vaccinating officials, international students and essential workers traveling abroad with COVID-19 experimental vaccines since July.
The Sinopharm president said this week that nearly a million people have already been vaccinated with the company’s vaccine. However, he did not specify the exact number.
“We have not received any reports of serious adverse reactions and only a few people have experienced some mild symptoms,” said Liu Jingzhen.
China was optimistic about its chances of developing an effective vaccine against the new coronavirus, which was first detected late last year in central China. Currently, four vaccines developed in China have reached the final stages of research.
Many of the trials are taking place abroad, as China has largely managed to control the epidemic.
Sinopharm is conducting late testing of two vaccines abroad. Studies of these vaccines are underway with volunteers in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Peru, and Argentina.
The company announced this week that it was “the world leader in all aspects of vaccine development,” but so far it has not provided any clinical evidence of the effectiveness of its vaccines.
Instead of publishing specific evidence, Sinopharm shared the experiences of those who had already been vaccinated, including “construction workers, diplomats and foreign students.” According to the company, these people visited more than 150 countries after vaccination and were not infected.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has announced that any Chinese vaccine will be a “universal public good”, the country will receive criticism, especially from the United States, for its actions at the beginning of the outbreak.
Many vaccinated people in China are not official participants in clinical trials conducted by a pharmaceutical company. It is said that they were voluntarily vaccinated.
A chain of biotech companies is competing to develop a vaccine against the coronavirus. The American company Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech and another American company, Moderna, published detailed results from clinical trials this month showing that their experimental vaccines are about 95 percent effective.
